Mic question

what button are you releasing??

maybe there's something in the way you are operating the camera that can be changed...as i can't think of any buttons near the mic that i need to press or release while recording.

The zoom rocker switch. The mic pics up depressing and releasing.

Just in case anyone wants more options, I am using an Audio Technica BP4029 (AT835ST) mic with a K-Tek shock mount/dead cat combo.

This mic is a mid-side microphone and offers some additional flexibility if you know how to deal with the signals in editing. This lets you adjust to an extent how much ambient noise you want to keep. It also offers two onboard stereo matrix modes if you don't have time to mess with that.

Haven't noticed any servo noise on the HMC40 yet recording classical and opera-ish events.

i only have the 875, but the 897 is 11" long.
one thing i love about my 875 is that it is short enough to fit in the built-in mic holder without sticking out in front of the lens when zoomed out wide.

if you go with a longer mic you pretty much have to attach a mic holder to the cold shoe to raise is up high enough to keep out of your shots.

Ditto on the 875 comments. It's short enough to even be out of frame while mounted in the mic holder on my HMC40 XLR adapter with a .7 WA lens in place.
