Mic question

1st, I want to say this forum is great. Loads of info. Learning allot. I have a question about mic's. I just purchased the HMC150. Doing some test shots to get used to it. I found that when zooming, the mechanism sound gets recorded. Presume due to where the mic is located. I come from years of consumer cams, my last being a Sony SR11, but don't know anything about external mics. If I buy an attached mic that mounts on the unit, will it still record the mechanism sound? Can someone recommend a decent mic that won't break the bank? B&H has 2 listed but the panny one is a bit expensive. Appreciate any help.

I currently have a sony mic on my cam, and the difference is night and day, I will be selling the sony camera soon so i will be buying a new mic for my HMC150, A friend of mine owns the mic Edweirdo mentions on his 150 and it works great. So I will be buying the same mic (Audio-Technica AT875) it's also one of the shortest mics out there, and it will fit nice mounted on the camera into the case!

Tnks for the info. Am assuming this plugs in to the camera and is powered by the camera. Right? Would like to hear from someone who has this and can tell me it doesn't record the servo noise. tnks again.

Yes it plugs right into the XLR socket and it's powered thru the camera phantom feature!

I haven't tested this unit myself, but my friend is really picky about noise and he hasn't complaint about any servo noise... But i do have experience with the sony shotgun mic and i don't hear anything from the servo motor!

Ive got a Rode mic on mine and it still picks up zoom and handling noise :(

That stinks. The handling noise I can handle but the servo noise I can't. Can you tell if say in a fairly moderate noise enviroment while videoing, can you hear the servo while zooming on the video?

I have the Panasonic AG-MC200G Super-Directional Phantom Powered Mic on my HMC150 and have no noise issues from the servo motor when using this mic. It works great and is of good quality

This was one of the more expensive mics, but well worth the $ IMHO. I have heard great things about the Sony mics as well.:)

i have the AT875 like edweirdo and LOVE it!

great price and solid hiqh quality clean sound.
best bang for your buck for SURE.

I looked at B&H. Do I have to buy that cable that states required? I don't need 20 feet of cable strapped to the camcorder. Looks like I can afford this one.

Might want to try something like this to get it off the camera's mount. We use this on the shoe mount or most of the time on a mic stand. 18" XLR will give you plenty of slack.

Just to pile on, I have an HMC150 and the AT875R mic as well. I don't zoom much so I haven't tested the servo sound. However, I love the mic otherwise! I may do a little testing later tonight and will let you know if I find anything other than what's already been stated above.

Got my mic and finally had time to test it a little in the house. I still hear the mechanism, though not as much, but the clicking from releasing the button is still there. I flipped the switches on the side as per page 48 and 49 of the manual. This sucks to have that noise in the clip. Is there any extender for camera mount I can use to move the mic higher? Or, is there a setting I can do to correct this. I want the mic to stay on the cam. tnks

what button are you releasing??

maybe there's something in the way you are operating the camera that can be changed...as i can't think of any buttons near the mic that i need to press or release while recording.
