Metal War Gear Solid - part 3 of our parody (Filmed with 2 7Ds)

We finally finished the editing on Part 3 of our series so I thought I would share it with you all. (I've also included the first two parts as well). This is a parody between two of the biggest franchises in modern game history (well actually, three now.)

Parts 1 and 2 started as us just playing with the 7D to see what it could do. We had so much fun, we just kept going and kept upping our game as we went along. Some notes as to what we did:

All filming was done on the Canon 7D (two of them) using a variety of lenses. The most common lenses we used were the Sigma 30mm, Tokina 11-16mm, Canon 10-22mm, Bower 85mm, Sigma 50mm, Canon 70-300mm (I believe, not my lens) and a Canon 50mm. (We had overlap since we were shooting two cameras).

A big special thanks to CMR who build the blackbird as they provided us with two blackbirds for this shoot. We used them A LOT.

In addition, a big thanks to Kessler Crane who also sponsored us with a Crane, to which I also purchased their flex dolly system. Their equipment is ROCK solid and was so easy to use.

(We will have some tutorials including footage from what we shoot coming later this year we liked these so much).

Also thanks to smallHD who loaned us a DP6 to use (along with our DP1x we had) and to Sigma who had us evaluate the 50mm F1.4 for video purposes.

I did 3D modeling and special effects with both Blender and Maya, in addition to using Kiloton by Blastcode for the physics destructions. Compositing done in After Effects, along with Photoshop. Optical Flow was used from Motion for some slow motion work.

Audio done with Logic Pro and Final Cut. All coloring and editing done in Final Cut.

If anyone has any specific questions, let me know. We are now working on Part 4 which should be out in a month or so I imagine. Although I am taking a short break getting ready to play with my AF100 VERY shortly. :) And, let my computer rest since it has been rendering non-stop for two months.

EDIT: We have just released PART 4 of the series!!!!! All the effects in this part were done with After Effects and Motion.

Thanks very much. I admit, I am a gamer :) Of course, now I consider the gaming as part of my research work for authenticity in the film :)

Part 4 should be a month or two. We have a few other obligations we have to do as well, but we are VERY excited to get the next 2 parts out, which will end the story.

Hey man, great job from one of the guys over at Infinity Ward. Some people over here at work really have been digging the web series.

Nice work guys! Great effects and costumes. Looking forward to the next installment.

Fantastic job! Love what you guys did with it (though I suck at both franchises ha).

Thanks everyone! Yeah, I've not played much Metal Gear Solid myself, but over Xmas I will be playing #4. I know how good it is, I played some of the earlier stuff.

That was easily one of, if not the best fan film/parody I've ever seen! But wow, how big is the budget on this production? Each one of those guns is at least $100+, right?

Actually, some of the guns were $300+, however, we were sponsored by eHobbyAsia, an amazing maker of airsoft rifles, for parts 3,4 and 5. Now that said, the creative directory had already purchased about 5 or 6 for the first 2 parts.

A lot of people ask about budget, but really, that is hard to say. For part 3 I bought one lens, but then again, I never count equipment I am going to reuse into the budget. We had a lot of combat gear sitting around in storage from another project, so we did a lot of reuse. We all did this for fun, so no one got paid (including ourselves) as this was a learning process for us all.

I'd say we paid less than $1k for food, use of the mill we shot at, some hotel rooms, and rental of the robot suits (from a friend). Heh, but if we include time and the amount of energy my mac pro used rendering, well, that is a different story.

If you haven't played the other 3, I'd recommend that before tackling 4 - otherwise it'll probably make little to no sense (to be fair, some people think it doesn't make sense anyway). If you just mean you haven't played 4 yet, then yeah, it's a satisfying close to the saga.

EDIT: forgot to mention I love the video series - can't remember where I first saw it (maybe Digg?)

Wow, that's awesome. You guys did such a wonderful job, I can definitely see you working in Hollywood someday!

Haha, yeah. Filming is only half of it. The editing is sometimes even harder, imo.
