Metal Racers Video Test

That would be a funny coincidence.

I used Premiere and Combustion for this little test. Picked the two "racers" since they were willing subjects sitting around bored on my bookshelf.

John, don't be surprised when your child starts coming home with more and more homework having to do with the metric system! I teach third grade and they are having to memorize all of the basic metric conversions such as converting Kilo to Milli and so on. I dare say the metric system isn't going anywhere anytime soon... except towards America!

I remember when Carter tried to metrify us; I was in the first few grades of school. Didn't work then. Won't work now. We're a stubborn lot, we Yanks.

Re: Metal Racers Video Test

Funny thing is... as I recall our current system for weights and measurements came from England.

Wasn't the term 'foot' derived from 'some' King of England's foot which measured in length (what we now call) 12 inches?

Re: Metal Racers Video Test

LOL, guys the metric system kicks ASS! It actually makes sense..I'm in highschool and really...it's coming to America...I have to use it all the time...and I can convert in my head..woohooo...It looks as if you may need to learn some basic conversions John...The time has come......:)

Re: Metal Racers Video Test

Thanks Barry................. Metric is the king......... always was always will be.......... :P

Re: Metal Racers Video Test

Forgive me for getting back on topic... (I personally have to deal with Nautical miles and Knots vs. Statute miles vs. Km so this discussion is kinda silly to me)...

What was the background? Your green/blue screening is quite good. I also work in Combustion and wondered at what you were using behind the racers to give you that clean of a mask (you might try a tiny bit of edge feathering to avoid some of the racing ants phenomenon, but not much as it's already quite good!).

Nice work! (Good choice of music, too!)

Thanks for the compliments.

For the background I used a large piece of bright green construction paper that I found at the local drugstore. They sell both a bright green and bright pink and I bought both thinking one or the other might work well. Only used the green for this test.

For lighting I used a work light (250w) as the key, set about 9feet/3meters away offset 20deg. For the back light, I setup the scene near a window. You can see the hilights from this (since it was a bit bright) on the front edges of the back racer. I had no fill light which is probably why I had problems keying on some of the edges.

I'll play around with edge feathering to learn more about it.

Overall, I'm rather happy with Combustion for keying. I've used After Effects for this in the past.

Re: Metal Racers Video Test

Hans, overall nice work, but I have a few suggestions from a compositing standpoint. I know it's a test, so ignore anything out-of-scope here.

First, if you were going to key, I'd definitely recommend simulating depth-of-field in post. Obviously, you wanted to play with the camera, so this isn't entirely relevant. Another thing that could help is blurring the background a bit to match the camera's rack focusing. It might make the clip a little more "believable."

Again, I know you were just experimenting here, so don't take me too seriously. I would post some of my own experiments with depth of field, but ... I don't own a DVX yet. :(

Good stuff. Keep it coming!

Very good point! Thanks for all the suggestions. That's exactly what I'm looking for. It really helps.
