Here is a little video I made to play around with my DVX-100a, depth-of-field focusing, and editing with Combustion. There was so much chatter about DOF, mini-35s, and tricks to simulate DOF that I wanted to just try a simple test with the camera. The two racers are about 0.6 meters apart. The camera was around 2 meters away.

I found the focus points for the two racers and then practiced focusing between the two numbers. During the filming I switched focus between the two. Not always hitting the mark exactly, but only off by 1.

Cheers!

Re: Metal Racers Video Test

LOL, awesome music...The DOF of the DVX is awesome for a MiniDV cam and I think a lot of people need to remember that it is a MiniDV cam. It is not a FILM CAMERA with a film lense!!! The DOF looked great in this video but you were a bit far away so that aided in the nice DOF you filmed....nice test..

Re: Metal Racers Video Test

Did you move the camera, or did you just move the clip?

I still don't get this DOF... all the exper'menting I've done, the best rack focusing I've been able to do was with subjects that were very close. You were over 6 feet away?

Re: Metal Racers Video Test

im assuming these toys are pretty small, and so he was most likely at z99 or very close at that distance. but yes, being closer to the subject narrows the dof, it is only a matter of being able to focus at the given zoom setting when being so close. IE : you cant focus on somthing very close when near full tele, so you have to back up, but being as close as you can combined with as much tele as you can get , gives a narrower DOF. so at z99 or so , the 6 feet is pretty near as close as your going to get while still keeping this frame, you could get the same, or much better results, if the tele was backed off, and exchanged for a closer distance(shorter focal length) to preserve framing under 6 feet though.

I moved the clip within Combustion. Set key markers here and there and adjusted the clip position.

Thanks, Loser ( ;) )

That's what I was getting... Ok - I'm on the right track.

Thanks

I went and checked the setup. Here's more information:

Default F5 setting
Zoom 81
Focus shift between 63 and 70

The racers are 15cm and 21cm high.

Re: Metal Racers Video Test

Crap, how many Centimeters are in an Inch.....We are American and are not smart enough for the metric system..jk :D

CaptM[/quote]

Um, nope. That's temperature conversion:

C = (5/9) x (F - 32)
F = (9/5) C + 32

Here is inches to centimeters:

1 in ~= 2.54 cm

Re: Metal Racers Video Test

Yeah... I mean, who wants more precision, smaller units of measurement, and a more standard naming system? ::)

Metric is clearly a superior system, all around. It's just not *our* system (speaking as an egocentric the-world-revolves-around-us American). Of course, while we continue to somehow think that a "foot" is a valid unit of measurement (which divides up into 12 "inches", which further get divided into 16 "sixteenths of an inch"), the rest of the world is happily dealing with everything in a stable Base 10 system.

I dunno, I hated the idea of converting to the metric system when I was in school, but nowadays when I want to do some critical measuring, it sure is a lot easier to use the metric side of the ruler and say "okay, that's 30 millimeters" than it is to use the english side and say "okay, that looks like... what is that, maybe one and seven 16th's of an inch, plus maybe half a tick"...

And, hey, why would we want a system where water freezes at zero, and boils at 100 degrees, when we could have it freeze at 32 and boil at 212? (depending on altitude, of course). The answer is, of course, that we KNOW what 32 degrees means, and zero sounds awfully cold, and why would someone whine about the heat when it's 40 degrees outside? ('cause in celsius, that's about 110 or so!)

C'mon, John... just 'cause we're used to it doesn't mean our system's "better"... ;)

Re: Metal Racers Video Test

I know that man! Damn.

What I said was tongue in cheek; but you know me by now. I'll leave the technical details up to the people who understand it. Granted, there are some things I can understand and figure out (basic algebra is about as hig has I go :P and do I mean basic.) but the technical side of things just bore me :-/

I love sailing and taught myself out of pure passion and drive but when it comes to the intense dynamics behind the design and physics I just dont care (I respect and understand the need for it and surely am glad there are people who do understand and make it happen, cough cough BARRY cough)

I love guitar and taught myself how to play. I once had a handful of lessons and the second they started trying to teach me the technical side (TRIADS: ROOT POSITION AND INVERSIONS, SEVENTH CHORDS AND LARGER STRUCTURES IN SUPERIMPOSED THIRDS) I quit. It just bored me. Probally prvent me from being a great guitarist but I can pick one up and jam!

Anyway. Damn Barrym you know I was just playin' :P

Re: Metal Racers Video Test

Those look just like the little metal racers which are pictured in the compositing section of the Pinnacle Edition user's manual . . .

As to Metric v. English, in many ways, Metric is superiorr, but I *like* things that aren't perfectly logical.  Besides, pretty much the whole countryside is set up on 1-mile grids, so that would be a lot of engineering headaches!

Two quotes:

P. J. O'Rourke:  "We have American Express credit card limits higher than your piss-ant Metric numbers can count."

Shepard Smith (to an embedded reporter who just said "30 kilometers ahead"):  (sarcastically) "Kilometers . . . what country are you from?"

Re: Metal Racers Video Test

Its like the debate around progressive, interlaced, fields, frames, CCD's, blah blah blah...

Thats no disrepect to the people who do understand this and do have an interest in the whys and ways and maybe if I did understand it (although its shockingly becoming clearer every month that passes which is freaky)

Who ****ing cares? Does my DVX kicks ass in the imagery department? Yes? Well then thats all I needed to know.

Re: Metal Racers Video Test

Hey, I'm with you, I still buy gas by the gallon, and I know what 115 degrees means (it means the guys passing out the whore pamphlets on the Las Vegas Strip are smellin' pretty rank by now).

And even though the metric system is superior, I still don't have a clue what a decaliter is.
