Metabones Speed Booster

I used both the speed booser and the standard mount and both worked well. Was primarily all canon lenses but I did use some Rokinon EF mount lenses. It's amaing as it turned the 2.8 zoom into a 2.0... WOrth the cost right there

I don't think this has been mentioned on this thread yet and if not, I am surprised. I purchased my Speedbooster and because of it's capabilities, immediately gravitated to get a lens I always overlooked as being too slow...the Canon 24-105mm f/4. It works and looks magnificent coming in at a f/2.8 with the Speedbooster. I got the lens on sale new for $729. I just put it through a full weekend of filming with Trans Am at the Infield of the Daytona 500, and driving shots through the city and on the beach, during day and at night. Very impressed in combination with the FS700's low light capabilities at higher ISO's. Coming from using pretty much all fast primes, having this much zoom range and with still this much low light performance was a complete pleasure for the run and gun shooting while still being able to accomplish some very nice Shallow Depth of Field shots.

Also in case it has not been mentioned on the thread as well, the Speedbooster does work with no problems on the Rokinon 24mm T/1.5 Cine, and Rokinon 85mm f/1.4 both EF mount.

So I have the Rokinon 85mm F1.4, compared to the T1.5, how fast to they compare to each other? I've wanted to try the Rokinon lenses but have NO clue how fast my current lenses really are for comparison.

And yes, I've used the 85 on the speedbooster, works really nice!

I have not done any exact testing, I can only speak from regular use in prodcution shoots and in Run N Gun filming. I can't really say I have noticed any better low light performance from my Rokinon 24mm Cine T compared to my my Rokinon 85mm f. The largest gain I enjoy out of the Cine is the aperture and focus ring are extremely smooth rotating instead of the aperture notching on which kills shots. Even without a follow focus, the gear rings on the Cine version are way quicker and easier to grip to my finger. I was trying to hold out for the 85mm Cine but couldn't wait any longer before I had to buy.

I bought the same lens recently and I'm pretty amazed with this combo. It's match made in heaven. I shot a full day with the lens and I didn't change to my FD primes once since it pretty well covered all my needs. Even indoors with just practicals was able to get nice exposure at full aperture (f4 turned to 2.8).

Yeah, right there with ya. I used this lens for 90% of my shots over the weekend and only slapped on one my primes for some beauty shots of our model with one of the Trans Am's by the beach. Other than that, even at night cruising down the streets getting peoples facial reactions to the cars, with the ISO around 4-5,000, I am so happy with how little to no noise is in the shots along with nice bokeh when zoomed in some. My FS700 actually feels like an ENG camera now when I need it to be and has a look of Depth my Panny ENG cams never had.

Here's a test shot with the Speed Booster and 24-105 f4 at 50mm f4 (2.8). All available light, 1600 asa and my new favourite cine4 profile (heavily color corrected!).

Here is a shot street lit, no grading, right out of cam with the Canon 24-105mm f/4 with Speedbooster at 2.8 and ISO at 5,000 on FS700.Trans Am TEST.Still011.jpg

Pretty amazing for an f4 lens and 5000 iso! I would actually prefer to expose darker than that! :D

I know, right! I found myself having bring it back down to 4,000 ISO when we got next to too many street lights. in parking lots, I was well exposed shots at 3,200 ISO. The 5,000 still held up when the street lights became more separated at less congested parts of the strip. One of the first times I have filmed where I am actually tickled that I have some overexposed shots:)

The Speedbooster really opens the doors to some great lens options for sure especially when with such a great low light cam. The FS100 apparently has even better low light performance than the FS700 so I can only imagine...but I am happy enough with this combo and love the other additional attributes the FS700 offers over the FS100 for sure.

I did some comparisons with my Canon EF 24-105 L f4 with Speed Booster and Canon FD 24mm f1.4 L lenses today. I wanted to test how sharp the EF lens is compared to my FD's so I can see if there's any advantage in using the FD's on occasion to get the low light performance of an f1.4 lens. I knew already that at f1.4 this lens is unusable, at f1.8 decent and I've only been using it at f2.

I was very surprised that when using the Speed Booster with the EF 24-105 L lens wide open (f2.8) the light levels match what I see on my FD 24mm at f2! At f2.8 the FD lens is already clearly darker then the EF at f2.8. Based on this I'd say the Speed Booster adds more then 1 stop of light at least compared to my 24mm FD lens.

In regards to sharpness I was equally surprised! I need to stop my Canon FD 24mm lens all the way to f3 to get the same sharpness I get with the EF 24-105mm at 2.8 and Speed Booster combo. The 24-105 lens is set at about 30mm to get the same field of view as the FD 24mm.

So in essence using the 24-105 lens I loose _very_ little light but gain a huge deal of sharpness. I can't think of any use for my FD lenses any more.

I need to test how the FD 85mm f1.2 L compares to the EF 24-105 f4.

Wow, really? Very interesting. I don't have any FD lenses but I do have the Rokinon 24mm and Rokinon 85mm. They are both EF mount so I can use them with the Speedbooster and it is pretty amazing when doing so. I have not had the opportunity to compare sharpness yet. My 50mm is Zeiss Contax which is a C/Y mount. I am now curious to compare the Zeiss that I can't use the Speedbooster with to the 24-105mm at the same aperture settings to see how they compare. Hope to get some time in the next couple of weeks to try out some side by side testing.

My FD 50mm has equal sharpness at f2.8 as well. However it's still decently sharp at f2 so I can definately use it, still gonna keep this one in my lens bag. My 85mm f1.2 L however has equal sharpness at f1.4! At f1.2 it is still very much usable, one of the sharpest lenses I've seen!

I think the Rokinon should be sharper then the FD lenses. From all the reviews I've seen they are very close to EF lenses sharpness even at wide open.

I kept the MetaBones II when I bought the new SpeedBooster and find great use for both. Normally, I use the II on my Canon 24-105 L and the SpeedBooster on the Canon 17-40 L - what a joy to have f2.8 with a true 17mm lens.

Also bought a C/Y - EF adaptor for my Zeiss Contax 35mm f2.8 and 50mm f1.7 for use on the SpeedBooster. Again, exceptional sharpness and the extra stop gives new life to the Zeiss/Contax glass!

Finally, I have the CineRokinon 14, 24 and 85 in EF mount and use them with incredible results on the SpeedBooster.

EDIT: I use an inexpensive Fotodiox C/Y-EF adaptor and it works great; sharp with no play in the mount. What I really like is the true 35mm @ f2 with the SpeedBooster.

That all sounds great! It is nice to have a normal adapter too for the extra distance we are used to with a Super35mm crop and for that reason I still bounce back to a dumb adapter I have for my ef mount when that is needed. May I ask what adapter you are using for your C/Y - EF mount? That is exactly what I need now that I have the speed booster. Does it fit snug and have you noticed any loss of sharpness with the double adapter method of this combo with the CY-EF / speedbooster? THANKS FOR THE INFO!
