GH2 Metabones Speed Booster Nikon G to m43 Test

Hi All,

I just got the Nikon G to m43 today and I did a quick test that I thought might be useful for us GH2/3 users.

This isn't a scientific test by any means, but it does show that a.) things look brighter, and b.) the FOV is wider! The 20mm Sigma 1.8 fully opened on a full-frame camera gets soft on the edges, so it was no surprise to see it get soft on the edges using the SB adapter. It's soft on both versions really.

The last bit on the video was a 20mm w/ and w/o the SB zoomed in on roughly the same spot. Of course the wider SB shot needed to be zoomed in more in order to match the non-SB shot.

Also worth noting, this is by far the best fitting adapter I have ever used. It takes a bit of effort to connect it to the camera body but there is a very reassuring click when it engages. Having half stop marks is nice too. I mostly got this so I could start using my 100mm in a room smaller than an arena and to finally have a nice wide 20mm in tighter spots.

I hope this was useful.

Very helpful. I invested in Minolta glass early as it was much cheaper and gave great results. I do have a Nikon 50mm F1.8 though, and am thinking I may need to invest in some Nikon lenses and a Metabones.

At some point we might want to start a thread (and sticky it) about which Nikon mount lenses give really great results when paired with the MBSB. There are a lot of great Tokina and Sigma lenses out there in Nikon mounts that would be killer to try. Folks could then post their results with samples for all to see!

Thanks to the OP for this great little test!

When using lenses made for full frame sensors on my Panasonic AF-101 I've experienced a lot of purple sensor flares. From all my experiments and experience I've concluded that it is because light is hitting the sensor from the sides because of the format the lenses were made for. The issue has been pretty difficult to deal with even when using a matte box. Have you ever experienced anything like that and, more to my point, does the speed booster change that?

that's odd... I use Olympus OM, Leica R, Nikon AIS and others extensively on my AF with and without the SB and haven't noticed severe purple flaring except with my Oly 50/1.4 wide open, and the Lumix 7-14... seems to be more a lens issue than a sensor incompatability

FYI, Metabones is supposedly making an MC/MD to m4/3 Speedbooster, out this fall/winter. So you may want to just wait for that.

Very helpful test. Thank you. I've been considering a Metabones SB + Sigma 18-35mm f1.8 combination (which would make it 12-25mm f1.2). This just pushes me closer to doing it.

Thanks for the post, like many people I have been looking for speedbooster samples all over the place.
