FS7: Metabones Rebate

"Offer valid only in the continental United States, Alaska and Hawaii; excluding territories."

Tha's a shame...

I note it's version II, not version IV. So, they must have known version IV and the Ultra suck on the FS7.

I cannot for the life of me understand all that legal mumbo jumbo on the link. It sounds like you need to buy your camera, then send them a bunch of stuff ( clips from the box, copies of the invoice etc,) and then Sony sends you the Metabones adapter. is that it ?

If so and you want to have one to use with your camera right away so you can use EF lenses - your out of luck until they process your rebate. If that's not it could someone please explain.
One thing I know is that B&H doesn't sell the MarkII anymore and I don't know how many Sony authorized dealers do.

Odd

You got it right on the rebate. You purchase the camera, fill in the form, send it along with the UPC barcode cut from the box the camera came in with your invoice from the sales company and Sony sends the adapter to you. My Sony rep says wait time is supposed to be about 2 weeks... I've broached the subject of the Mark II vs Mark IV but have not heard back exactly what version they are shipping.

Yes EF lens use will be delayed if you are only planning to use the Metabones adapter you get in the mail from Sony. A value added reseller might be able or willing to process the rebate request before shipping the camera to you. Depending on where you are and shipping method of the camera this could cut a couple days to almost a week off your rebate processing time.

Sales, rebates, promotions - it's all about selling extra units. But who eats the cost is the issue. Manufacturer rebates tend to have all these legal mumbo-jumbo and restrictions for several reasons-
First, they want to make sure they only give the rebate to people who fully completed the purchase terms. No one wants to be scammed out of a $400 item.
Second, rebate offers tend to count on only a percentage of buyers actually following through, reducing final cost of the promotion.

Also, I'd assume that with the Mark II having been superceded and discontinued, Sony likely cut a very advantageous deal with Metabones on cost. I highly doubt they're paying retail for these.

I didn't know this rebate was going to apply to the FS7, so I bought a Metabones, but I see no reason not to apply for this rebate and get a second one.

Nice find. I have a couple of these now (a mark IV smart and an ultra) but hey, a) this is free. B) right now, according to Dan Chung's tests, the Mark II actually works the best on the FS7.

Metabones has has noted recently in email that they will have an updated firmware for mark IV, Ultra adapters specifically for FS7 soon by the way.

You mean "wholesale", right?

Sony is definitely not paying retail for these. I'd say they bought the entire remaining inventory for $50-$75 per unit.

Well, I meant exactly what I said. By definition, if they're paying less than retail for a bulk purchase, it's automatically "wholesale", regardless of the exact price.

I think your price guess might be right, but I'm not sure if they actually bought the whole inventory. The problem is that could leave them owning units at the end of the promotion.

Better perhaps to cut a deal to purchase exactly however many they need to fill rebates at a pre-contracted bulk rate price. And possibly to have them dropshipped so Sony doesn't have to stock them.

What's the difference between II , III, & IV anyway ?
Is II the only one that works right now . Haven't heard about III .
Also don't you have to send the IV back to
metabones for update? So you can't use your lenses foray least a week ?

I wish it was 1 week. I've heard from almost everyone it's about 3 weeks total. IV, you'd can do the firmware yourself.

Does anyone know if they are updating the firmware for the original Speed Booster to work with the FS7? I need to mail that, and the Mark II back for FS7 compatibility.

On another note, we did a 2 camera shoot with the FS700 yesterday and one of the nearly brand new Metabones would not change aperture. They are a blessing, but they fail way too often.

The Mark IV version has improved inner coating for less reflections and only the Mark IV can
accept the firmware updates via micro USB at your computer (windows only :( ).
All the others have to be sent to HK...

Worth noting; the Speedbooster Ultra can be updated by the user. I've done it myself.
