FS7: Metabones PL to E-mount Speedbooster(!)

Seems strange to me....
Putting a $700 piece of glass between the sensor and a $30K + PL lens ? No Thanks?

Maybe meant for lower end PL lenses, but even still...

I'm with you on that, but turning a set of Cooke S4 Minis into T2s is going to win it a lot of fans.

EDIT: Assuming they clear the glass as mentioned above.

Very few traditional lenses have the Vistavision coverage to work with this anyway, so I don't think that's all that big of a deal. I've just emailed Metabones for confirmation of the deepest possible lens throat a PL-mount lens could have and still fit safely on this Speedbooster.

I think Optitek is right. Even though the PL has a greater flange focal distance than EF and F lenses (52mm vs 44mm for Canon and 46.5mm for Nikon) theoretically leaving more space for any elements in between, the rear elements of these lenses actually protrude deeper / get closer to the film/sensor plane than in EF and F systems, that's because the mirror moves circularly rather than flapping up so it does not collide with the lens. That's why in order to use some of the PL lenses on EF cameras you have to remove the mirror completely.

A revised version of the FZ mount that can be adapted to E-mount (or better yet, support speedboosters of it's own) would be better. But as an owner of the Zeiss CZ.2 zooms, this is a sublimely enticing piece of kit - I could turn my lenses into a 19.5-57mm T/2 and a 50-142mm T/2, with all the optical goodness that the CZ.2s provide.

That would be awesome.
yeah that too. most SLR derived lenses have FF coverage already. Traditional Cine glass- rarely. Small percentage of (small family) of cine lenses with one camera mount= really tiny nitch.
Got to command MB for doing that.....

So an S35 sensor is something like 24X18mm with a diagonal of 31mm

So you would need a lens whose image circle divided by 1.7 is 31mm or more

The S4 lenses have a 34mm image circle, which divided by 1.7 is 20mm .. which is well shy of 31mm

Im sure someone will chip in with the correct maths but you get the drift.

Finally you will be able to use these CZ.2's that were gathering dust in the basement.

Well, they finally did it:

http://www.metabones.com/products/details/MB_SPPL-E-BT1

A PL-mount Speedbooster for E-mount cameras.

Paired with the FS7ii's positive-locking E-mount, this could be pretty incredible - The CP.2s, CZ.2s, Sigma Cine Primes, Schneider Xenons, Xeens and the new Tokinas all become a stop faster with a wider FoV.

A set of the new Sigma Cine Primes would literally become faster than Master Primes(!), and the CZ.2s become lightweight T/2 zooms(!).

Very, very cool.

I'd really like to have an FS7ii now.

PL mount is nice but this SB will only work for the new crop of retrofocal PL lenses that are based on AF couterparts. Very few traditional cookes Zeisss angenieux would have the rear element clear the speed booster glass. PL mount is just a mount- the glass remains where it was. You could use PL to EF/Fmount adapter and the old EF/Fmount to e mount speed booster. Speedboosters do not clear the FZ mount front glass either....
It looks like MB is trying to fill every little nitch at this point with the speed booster glass.

You're basically right, although an equally important factor is that traditional PL mount lenses generally don't have a big enough image circle for use with a Speed Booster on S35. Being restricted to FX format optics that are housed with a PL mount isn't necessarily a bad thing for this reason. The good news is that there are now some pretty interesting stills lenses that are being offered with a PL mount and cine mechanics.

The main reason for high prices of cine lenses is low production volume and expensive mechanical parts. Optical quality has very little to do with the huge prices. There's a reason why you never see MTF charts for cine optics.
