Metabones Hell

Hello,

I've been using my A7RII for some weeks and I'm loving this camera, incredible video and gorgeous stills, I'm not regretting my MarkIII.
After a lot of fiddling I'm used to all the quirks of the camera that doesn't bother me much for the results you get.

However I am quite unhappy with the metabones behaviour (I'm using a Metabones EF/NEX Mark IV).
Many times, when I power on the camera, 2 things happen :
- The aperture displays a strange F--, seemlingly doesn't recognize it and apparently shoots full open when doing so
- Many times, as I wanted to take a picture, the AF is like not activated and when I press the shutter the camera freezes for some seconds, and I have to power it off and back one.

This is quite annoying and made me miss quite some shots ! And I'm not very happy from a 400$ adapter
Are you experiencing the same problems ? Has anyone found a great Metabones alternative (that also behaves nice with auto switching on and off IBIS when using IS lenses or not because apparently some other adapters don't).

Thanx a lot for you experience feedback !

I just got an A7RII and I have been using it with a Kipon adapter with the cheap Canon 50mm and Tokina 11-16 EF and sometimes I get the same "F--".
I thought it was the Kipon but I guess it might be the camera then.

Check the pins on your metabones. Sometimes they get stuck in a pushed in position and wont communicate with the camera properly.

Welcome to the club! You will find a range of opinions on these things but after countless firmware updates, 3 replacements and a fair amount of research I have come to the conclusion that using canon L glass on on my a7rii is simply not an option. Since jumping through those hoops I have since purchased 2-3 fe lenses and life has been headache free / spectacular. Still adapt my L glass once in a while, but by no means would I rely on them for paid work. Had many of the same issues with fs700 package a while back. The convenience is not worth the headache in my opinion.

On a side note, my photodiox adapter works fast and flawless on all of my lenses with the exception of the sigma 18-35 1.8. I run into the same issue as you where in the second I push the shutter button the camera freezes and reboots(even with half press AF disabled).

People have been also testing the new Sigma adapter and much with the same results. On Sigma EF mounts, it sort of works OK but not on Canon's own. The best solution for those who own Sony cameras is to go with Sony's or Zeiss's E-mount glass.

Thanx for your replies !

I'll check about firmware and maybe check out the fotodiox.
I don't fell aroused by FE lenses yet, seemingly quite overpriced for what they do, and sometimes with fly by wire focusing which is not good for video, though I confess I never tried one.
But I'll never let go my Canon 24-70 2.8 L II and the 100 L IS 2.8 as they kickass so much !

For information Samyang has announced 14mm 2.8 and 50mm F4 in FE mount with autofocus and probably a good quality/price balance :

Well, Both GM 24-70/2.8 and the FE 90/2.8 are actually better optically then the canon counterpart. But the focus by wire might be an issue with the 24-70/2.8. And ofc the price to pay for the exchange :)

This is a different situation. Sigma never claimed to support Canon lenses, Metabones does. I've experienced issues like this before, it really sounds like a pin connection problem to me.

Correct on Sigma vs. Metabones (didn't mean to imply otherwise).

On the early Samyang FE primes tests, some claim the motor may be malfunctioning or improperly tuned in to the cameras.

A side opinion on Canon vs. Sony branded lenses is that I'd wait until 5DMKIV is revealed (should be by September) and whatever Sony might show by then. Conceivably, once these non-compete agreements expire, Sony might come out with something in the full frame mode at under $2,000 (A7III or something like it). Sony cripples their products too but not as heavily as Canon.

Owned about a dozen Canon lenses before purchasing my a7rii.. Now I own 6 and would never go back to the adapters. The convenience factor of using any lens you want is great and all, but mirrorless bodies are an absolute JOY to use when paired with lenses that were designed for them.
