Metabones adapter & indiSYSTEM SNAP! Gear - Pulling Focus with Contax G Lenses

I meant to do this a few months back but as usual things got busy. Just a quick no frills demo on cutting the Contax G 28mm lens legs in case you need more of a visual representation of how its done. You can do this with the 21mm Contax G as well.

Here's a little piece shot with the same Contax G 28mm lens after its legs were cut off and mounted on a Metabones adapter. I had a Raynox HD-6600PRO wide angle adapter in order to prevent camera shake. Downside lots of lens flares. So it's something to be aware about but you can still get a taste of its use in sort of a documentary run and gun style of shooting.

Hi gmoe,
Why so much flare, is it because wide angle adaptor or because of lens coating.?
I have another question if you dont mind, i know the contax lenses are good but how is metabones adaptor, can u able to focus easyly.thank you very much

Yes, there's a hell of a lot of flare with the Raynox adapter. I wasn't expecting to do any shooting on my work trip so I didn't bring the right gear. Good mattebox and ND filters would have helped. The morning California sun was pretty intense so lots of reflective light on the water and a large part of the opening was shot towards the sun. I have some still pics that I took where I took off the Raynox and there was still a little flare but not as much as with the adapter on.

Metabones adapter is by far the best of the crop for using Contax G glass with m4/3. It is very well built and fairly easy to focus once you get the adapter on correctly. That is really the key. You have to adjust it depending on your lens to get the best smoothness. It is not the easiest adapter to put on but once it is on it is is pretty smooth depending on the lens you use. That is also the key. Each lens is different and there are slight variations on smoothness based on how well the internal focusing mechanism is on your lens. I had one 35mm Contax G that had an issue where it would bind half way when focusing and I had to send it to my lens guy to see if he could clean it out which he did and now it works fine. So smoothness is both related to your lens and the adapter itself. Some of the newer Metabones adapters seem to lock on fairly well but I did have a couple of the first production versions and I had a hard time getting it on my lens and finally had to send it back to China. So patience, luck, and persistence is all part of the process but if you do invest in these lenses and a good mount I think its well worth it. :)

Thank you for your answer, i have got afew glenses allready, so i will give go with new qh2

What's up, gmoe. I PM'd you a few weeks ago but I'm not sure if you got my message. I've tried getting a hold of indisytem via email but I'm having a very difficult time getting in touch with them. I'm trying to by the SNAP! collar and a SNAP! gear to go with my Metabones and GH1. You are the only person that I've found on the internet that speaks of this combination. Do you know if it would be possible to find these tools anywhere else?

Sorry Trey, I just PM'd ya!

I've been busy away on vacation for the holidays and then had to get back to the flow of things here at work so I've been away from the forums.

Talk directly to Tim Ovel and call in the early morning or late evening those are the best times to reach him. I've been working with Tim on this over the past year in between his usual busy schedule. In fact, we finally got one working that is really the best of the bunch because he had my Contax G Metabones adapter and 45mm lens to play with over the holidays. This new version is much better and I've tried it on a number of adapters and it is pretty solid. With the new improved collar for the Metabones adapter it provides a groove so that the SNAP! Gear does not slip at all. It's also made so that the collar snaps on the Metabones adapter and it is far enough away from the body of the camera to give the SNAP! Gear room to breathe and rotate.

I hope to post a quick video tutorial to show how it works shortly. I'm still trying to play catch up on stuff so feel free to PM if you have any further questions.

That must be nice, gmoe. Unfortunately I am having a very hard time getting email reply from indisystem. I would buy that metabones collar and the SNAP! gear in a heart beat too.

Okay I finally called indisytem and spoke to Tim. Sounds like a nice guy and my "collar" and "gear is on the way now. I guess I should have called in the first place. Heads up to any future buyers.

Trey

Glad to hear that Trey. Yes, definitely go the route of calling. Tracy or Traci who usually picks up is great and well get the message to Tim. Call in the morning or late afternoon and you can usually reach him. Let me know how it works out for you.
