Merry Christmas! Happy Christmikah! (I think that's it)

(PS- what the hell does X-mas mean? C'mon...)

Robbie

I believe (and I could be mistaken), but the Greek letter X (Chi) being the first letter of Christ is used as an abbreviation. But since it's just the first part of the word, it may as well be call C-mas (for us english speaking kids). It's the equivalent.

But then it should be "Christ." Not "X".

Who agrees?

Robbie

Well as usual you are wrong. Of course, even if you were right, most of us would just go ahead and disagree with you, just because it was you that said it.

Just kidding... sorta.

Merry Christmas to you all.

And fwiw, the X in X-Mas usually is short for Christ, because it sounds so close to cross, and an X looks like a cross. Now, XXX-mas is entirley diferent :D

I thought the X was maybe from X meaning 'criss-cross', thus the criss part. But the Greek letter explanation sounds better. Leave it to us to argue about Christmas on Christmas Eve, haha.

Merry Christmas and happy holidays. :)

"Cristes" is from Greek Christos and "mæsse" is from Latin missa. In early Greek versions of the New Testament, the letter Χ (chi), is the first letter of Christ. Since the mid-16th century Χ, or the similar Roman letter X, has been used as an abbreviation for Chris

The term "Mass" is derived from the late-Latin word missa (dismissal), a word used in the concluding formula of Mass in Latin: "Ite, missa est" ("Go; it is the dismissal")

The word Christmas originated as a compound meaning "Christ's Mass". It is derived from the Middle English Christemasse and Old English Cristes mæsse,

And while at it, did you know that the word "merry" comes from ancient egyptian language and means love? (I do ancient egyptian and hieroglyphs since a view semesters and that was one of the first words we learned)

Merry X-Mess :D
