Just wanted to take the opportunity to post a link to the trailer for an Indonesian martial arts film, 'Merantau', that I recently DoP'ed
Camera-wise, we used two HPX500s both with P+S Technik Pro35 adaptors.

Hope you enjoy!

Not my kind of thing but respect in terms of the scope of the movie.
Those stunt men take some pretty hard falls.

Great looking trailer. Saw it on http://www.slashfilm.com/page/2/ and have been passing it around the web. How did two guys from Wales end up shooting a martial arts film in Indonesia?

I spent some time in Sumatra and it's a beautiful place.

The part at the end of the trailer when he's moving along backwards along the couch is great!

Please let me know if it gets released in the UK in cinemas or on DVD.

Awesome stuff. Very professional and well put together. You did a great job as DP with some spectacular shots.

Aside from cinematography, the rest of the film looks just as amazing. I'm very much into this stuff and Tony Jaa films are very fun. This reminds me of him, but it seems to be a different fighting style, and some very inventive and clever choreography. It's always great to see something fresh. OVer-all this looks like a top notch production.

Any more info you can tell us about the behind the scenes? How you got on the project, who these guys are, where you shot, etc...

haha yea it is a bit random - two welsh guys making a martial arts movie in Indonesia.
TO cut a long story short, we were both involved in making a documentary in Indonesia a couple of years back, where we travelled across Java and Sumatra documenting different styles of Silat, this ancient martial art. Through the project we got to see lots of different styles, and the importance to the culture of Indonesia.
We got a lot from the project that we used in the film - the style (Silat Harimau), the fight choreographer (and Silat master), a lot of the locations, and of course, the star, Iko Uwais, who we met during the project.
The martial art seemed such an incredibly filmic and incredibly interesting discipline, and one that has hardly been used before, certainly not in any recent major features in the last 20 or so years. So we are real excited to introduce people to the style. And of course it was a blast to film.

And now one welsh boy is living in Indonesia, and the other (me) has recently moved to the States. So randomness ahoy!

In terms of behind the scenes stuff, I don't know if you had a look at the production blogs we have produced - if not, I am sure they will be a better insight into the process than I can give. You can find them on the film's website, www.merantau-movie.com - I think they are a great series of Behind the Scenes, and it was one of the priorities during the project to show the process of making it.
I'm more than happy to answer any questions about the production, but as I say, I'm sure the videos will give a much more coherent guide to the project than I would

Thanks so much for the comments !
Matt
