Memory cards

Just want to know if i really need a class 6 card or will a class 4 card do? the class classification generally refer to transfer rate and not writing rate yeah?

cheers.

just adding to mr fannys question. i found a 8gb sdhc for sale at office max for 20$ but it was a class 2 card. if the writing speed is slow does that mean that the footage can come out worse than youd want it to?

Class 2 will not work at all more than likely.

Class 4 will work but only from a reputable brand like Sandisk (Ultra II work great) but I wouldn't trust a say, transcend class 4...some people have problems with the class 6!

Transcend Class6 writes with ~ 10-12, reads with ~ 16-18, thats twice/threetimes of "class6"

I use them for 1920x1080 video with Canon SX1 = 43 (!) Mbps = 5.4 (!) MBps. Highest like 5DMkII.

GH1 has 17 (!) Mbps

Sandisk's necessarity is overkill/fairytale

I'd point you to all the other threads here on people with actual experience shooting on the GH1 having transcend cards fail but it's not worth my time.

Sandisk Ultra II are available for a great price, I got my two 4gb cards for $34 at costco, and they're available for even cheaper online.

Sandisk was recently offering a rebate which I believe is still valid to allow you to get cards for even cheaper.

I wasn't doubting that the transcend cards would work fine when they do work, I am doubting that they will work for the rest of your camera (and your next several cameras) operational life without failing on you mid-shoot or when you go to dump. I have a transcend class 6 microSD card in my cellphone...I wouldn't trust it in my GH1.

I'm using Transcend cards in ALL my cameras (also microSDHC), even in DSLRs with an CF-SD adapter. I never got an error (daily use) with a lot of photos and videos.

For this price I buy my Transcend class6 16 GB :-)

Cool have you used them in a GH1?

Because there a plenty of people here that have and more than a few of them have had problems.

I am very happy with Transcend 16GB class 6 card as well. No problem whatsoever. The price has gone up a little though. I paid $33.95 a few weeks ago and it is about $40 at Amazon.

I just did a test with the PKNY (sp?) class 4 cards, about $26 at Best Buy (the only game in town). I was able to pull the AVCHD files from the GH1, no problem. I checked the rate of the copied files in Quicktime pro, and saw that it was still 17 mbs. But I'm a newbie at this, and maybe I'm doing something wrong -- but it seemed to work just fine.

Of course. 50% of my pictures are made with GH1.
GH1 movies are only 17 Mbps, Canons SX1's are 43 Mbps! - All okay.

Price for Transcend class6, 16 GB raised +40% last months :-( ... but price is half of Sandisk :-)))

Read speed of most class2/class4/class6 = ~ 16-18 MBps.
