Media Composer on PC vs MAC platform

What is your take on this issue ? Any advantages of using either platform ? How stable is MC going to be on windows ? Thanks again guys. Looking to do the switch before year end.

I find them about equal. The Mac platform is feels a tiny, tiny bit slower, but the fact that there is better ProRes support makes up for that.

Thanks for the input, what do u mean by better pro res support ? And also if i would to go PC, should i just build my own machine or is it better to buy one out of their recommended model n vendor ? Like one of the recommended HP workstation?

"better prores support" as in: on Media Composer 6 on a mac, you can use prores files the same as their native DNxHD codec. You can "fast import" a prores file, and it doesn't transcode, it simply rewraps into MXF format. Addionally you can render prores on your timeline, or capture to prores MXF too.

Updates come faster to PC then to MAC. Not by Avid's choosing. Apple does not share any pre-release OS with Avid.

I would say if you are getting a desktop machine go PC if Laptop go MAC. Thunderbolt is sexy.

Support for Mac and PC comes at the same time. Avid doesn't release PC updates before Mac updates. I haven't seen that happen at all lately.

PC Avid has the advantage of having an "app backplate," meaning that it has an interface that blocks the desktop, so you cannot accidentally click on it, taking you out of the application. I don't notice and zippiness difference between Mac and PC, and I use both.

Always buy the recommended hardware Avid suggests. Do to any less risks your system not working properly, and that causes loss of productivity. Want to build your own, do it as your own risk.

I am actually looking at the HP z800 system. Any + or - on this HP workstation ??

We use them at work and, honestly, they restored my faith in the mac pro setup all over again. Running Win7 64bit, these things kept crashing with the Avid Mojo setup we had... We bought separate FW800 expansion cards, but firewire speeds (both on the internal FW400 of the system, and the FW800 expansion card) are far slower than on a mac -- but I'm guessing that's an OS-level thing, not the fault of the Z800.

Bottom line they are "pretty good" I guess, but nothing special in the class of workstation-level machinery.

what about running Media Composer ? does it still crash as badly ?

Nah, they don't crash very much now that MC 5.5.3 fixed most of the bugs we were experiencing. The issue was more so with the Avid Mojo -- which has compatibility issues with Windows 7 and MC 5.5. I just feel underwhelmed by the system's transfer speeds and general performance.

z800's rock solid for us - 8 media composer licenses. Mixture of legacy adrenaline and nitris dx hardware. V5.5.3 seems pretty stable. Holding off on v6 for the moment.
