Maybe one day soon.. but is it the answer?

Was just thinking of changes I would love the Canon 7d to have but then I had to remind myself that this was intended for camera purposes first, film ability is just an add on. I can't seem to rack my brain with how comes canon camcorder section can't simply bring out 7d ability but in xh-a1 body, and with a high quality 3ccd ability which would nullify rolling shutter and jello, and interchangeable lenses, even if they charged 2k for just the body Id be interested, maybe they could call it Canon XH-PRO. Not sure what other add ons people would have as Im still learning basics, perhaps there are better sensors out there than 3ccd but its only one I know which would reduce jello and rolling shutter

Forget about 3CCD's. They require a prism (beam splitter) to direct the light on each RGB sensor thereby taking up space,Lots of space, especially full frame. Also the fact that it would consume much more power to run them. XLR inputs ? Too Big, perhaps as add ons like Beachtek had on their prosumer vid cams. I have been asking that one day the Foveon sensor (full frame that is) will be incorporated in a body of some sort with a total of 30MP ( 10MP on each RGB layer). Also deemed impossible for whatever reason by naysayers. All I can tell is that RED will be up for some stiff competition considering the pace of technology. Who knows what Japan has cooking up.

meh, i could care less about full frame. And keep it CMOS, just increase the readout speed. And yeah, increase the body size (under) and add the XLR's. I'd be down..

I don't really agree with the addition of XLR inputs on these cameras. But if they were to be added, I believe a better place for them in a hot shoe mounted box similar to what Sony used to have for the PD-100. Really all you need is one XLR jack. If you want to start doing multiple mics you should use an external recorder.
I think a hot shoe mounted box with an XLR jack on one side and a removable electronic viewfinder in the middle would make a nice addition.

Personally though, I'd like to see a bluetooth or wifi chip added to these HDSLR's that allow them to grab a wireless audio signal from an external box. Then future recorders similar to the H4N could not only record a track on board, but also shoot off a signal to the camera of it's recording. Thereby allowing the sound to be better controlled by someone else while still being recorded directly to the camera (and to the device itself) while shooting.

If the current release of DSLR cameras were to shift the "other way" they wouldn't look like DSLR cameras. Size is an important factor here. We get what we get because of the number of features they are trying to squeeze into a small DSLR body. That, and they are primarily still image capture devices.

When you think about the size of these units they are actually incredibly small for what they are capable of. If all of a sudden we got what we wanted in a video camera, it would no longer be the same size of the DSLR cameras. Not saying it's a bad thing, but they are that size for a reason.

Show me any other "video" camera on the market today that is better, AND smaller, or at least the same size, as the DSLR cameras. Even the Scarlet camera will be bigger when it is all built up to shoot, record, and monitor, and that's probably the closest video camera comparison you are going to get.

very fair point, I dont know any cam for the size that can match performance and price. I keep thinking I wonder what went through Jim at red's mind when 5d and 7d got released. Was it "...oh sh!t" I know alot of people discuss how great red will be and so forth and can't compare to 5 or 7d but I wont be getting one even if price is attractive. How on earth can I get a powerful enough computer to render 2k images :Drogar-Thinking(DBG. I remember talking to a guy who once went to Nab and said that when he saw red one camera they had to hide a lot of the computers that were rendering the footage behind a screen and just had a neatly on show little tower and screen monitor whilst the towers behind the screen were doing most the work on rendering lol, not sure if its true or not but can imagine.

Been shooting for a week now with 7d for work adverts for web, and got to say only complaint I have is I wish I knew about this camera sooner, footage clarity is unreal and camera is so easy to use. Cheers Papa for sound advice you gave me on this cam and persuading me to sell the xh-a1 best move ever

Those XLRs and audio controls are ridiculous. Its more realistic to add one dedicated audio button and use the existing wheels to control audio fuctions and levels. Also, full size XLR is a terrible idea on a camera this small. I vote for something even smaller than mini XLR even though it would be proprietary. It shouldn't be quite as expensive given the pricing in the photo industry. Also a dedicated vertical grip with more video centric controls and connectors.

3 chip, really?

Not really sure what you're talking about here. At the last agency I worked at I was working with 2K footage on a quad core mac pro. This was 2 years ago.

Regardless, any computer can render the footage. It just takes time. If the machine can't handle it, then you can always cut using offline proxies.

was just a bit of improvising, one mini xlr with agc control and volume would be sweet. Sure wont be long till they make these cams shoot raw

What I'd like to see is a battery grip with one or possibly two XLR ins, whatever voodoo it would take to get that to the camera's 1/8" mic in, and still leave room for one battery.

Any ambitious modders out there? Extra points if the battery could provide phantom power to the XLR(s).

One of these days, we T2i and 7D owners will have manual audio gain control (Magic Lantern or Canon firmware update ala 5DII) and it would be nice to utilize it with pro mics without paying out the yingyang.

I'd like to see an add on articulated lcd and viewfinder for the canon like they have on the sony ex3.

Its just a matter of time before they start putting full frame 35mm CMOS chips into the prosumer line. They have to! HD DSLR tech has put a tremendous squeeze on Sony, Panasonic, and even the Canon prosumer line to step it up.
