i want to buy a matte box for my dvx. i saw one on ebay for less than $100 bucks. what is the difference with this one compared to the more expensive ones.

and does it have any effect on zooming in and out?

Without knowing which ebay model you're looking at, and which "more expensive" ones you're comparing to, here are things to consider:

Some matte boxes clamp on to the lens. Others require a rails system.

Are you wanting a mattebox just to aid in keeping extraneous light out, or do you want to be able to use filters? Some cheap matte boxes may or may not allow filters. They'll say in the item descriptions. If it takes filters, you'll see a number of filter stages, which is the number of filter holders it houses. Some rotate, and some are fixed. Rotating filter stages can come in handy for grad filters and polarizers.

Cheap matte boxes typically have poor build quality, meaning that they'll dent/ding/break rather quickly. And if they have filter trays, you can be almost sure that those trays are as flimsy as they can be without being made of tissue paper. Once a filter tray gets mangled, it has to be replaced.

Like everything else in production gear, you get what you pay for.

And the matte box should not affect your zoom capabilities at all.

the one i was looking at do not have a rail system and it clips on the lens like you said and it does have 2 4x4 filter slots.

which matte box would you recomend for the dvx 100a without braking the bank?

actually i only have $150.00 but first is there really a difference with it than without it?
