Matt Sconce- Stricken

and we're not seeing at least some of them because .... why? :)

Well...Probably because as an artist....I suck! I guess I shouldn't let that stop me! Woohoo! I will go crazy and post some of my horrid drawings so you can see! I use them as a reference point for the shot, and when I work with the camera, the shots come together. Okay...hold on to your hats, because storyboard pictures are coming! :Drogar-Evil(DBG):

I have never done storyboards, I tried drawing, I tried software...I always end up with hunderds of kilobytes of word documents and excel sheets and notepads just planning my ideas written and then of course we start shooting and we're like 'hmmmm ok so you come through the door...and oops I dont like this shot...go back again' LOL ;-)

C'mon! Let's see 'em! It's always great to see how different people work and how they get from point A to point B.

And Jaustere, I loved your drawings!!

Storyboards

Here are some Storyboards. This is the best I do, so I hope they are understandable.

Well, there are some storyboards from Stricken. I just realized I jumped number from frame 33 to 36. I must have thought the 33 was a 35 when I was numbering them. I will post some test shots from location soon.

Hey Matt. It's great to see everything is progressing along nicely with your film!

If you are still in need, I'd be happy to help out on the set in whatever way.

I need some of you guys color grading expertise. Below, I have posted some lighting test one of the Junior Highers in my Youth Group helped me with. He is not in the movie, but he is the subject for the tests. The first pictures of each set are before CC and the next are with the Berlin Magic Bullet Filter applied. That is the look I am going for, but Berlin puts a lot of Noise into the image. Can anyone attempt some CC on the before pics that pulls off a similar look as the Berlin, but does not add noise?

Thanks guys! Lighting tips would help too! I am lighting them with two 75 watt bulb and a 130 watts in a soft box pointed up at them. Should I throw more light?

I'd check your white balance Matt. I think it may be off in these test shots... the light looks REALLY orange.

Ok, here's a try... I desaturated it a bit, took out some red... brought the black level down a bit. Seems there is inherent grain in the image already, may be because of the adapter.

Brandon:

I think Matt's cc'ed versions are much more interesting. His originals look like horror film grabs, whereas your version just looks generic...

This is awesome guys! Thanks! Hey Brandon, I totally forgot to White balance. ARG! What a goof up especially when I am supposed to be testing for the actual shots. :furious3:
I just realized why there might be so much grain...I have the detail and V detail set at +5. Even though I have the Detail Coring set to +7, I think the details levels may be enhancing the noise...What do you think?

So, these are the conclusions I am coming to at the moment. Lower the detail level, white balance, pump more light at the subjects (one more 150 watt), so I have more info to work with. I am going to mess with some settings and see if I can use a setting to get a similar effect without the noise. Thank you very much for helping!

haha, no problem man, I thought that might be an issue. Anyway, I think your idea may work, I think mess around with those settings, write them down, shoot the same shot, choose which settings you like after comparing them. And yeah, pump more light into the shot! Those 35mm adapters suck the light like nobody's business.

you need more light and to crank your master ped way down
you'll get less noise and still have the shadows roll off into black

Most people say shoot as wide open as you can so that you are getting as much light as possible into the camera to minimize noise.

Some say you always want to shoot with aperature around 4 or 5 because that is the sweet spot for the leica lens for maximum sharpness.

But its best to use more light and throw on the ND filters if you have to and crank the master ped down. In post experiment with crushing the blacks further using proc amp or bleach bypass or color corrector or brightness contrast bezier.

Also since you forgot to white balance you have a lot red. Red is the most artifacty and noisey color for the DVX and does not render well in NTSC (or film) so that is adding noise to your original footage as well.

Look at the back wall and you will see the noise is identical. When you are applying the filter it's just correcting a littel for the under exposed image and you can see the noise more in the skin tone.
