I used the search function, but I didn't see much discussion of this item. I've also looked for reviews of this gadget online, but not much is out there yet.

Does anyone have one of these to monitor HD?

A couple of questions:

1) Is it similar in function to the HDLink by Decklink? In other words, does it map HD "pixel for pixel" on a 23" Apple Cinema Display?

2) Can you use it to monitor to BOTH a 23" Apple Cinema Display, AND the Panasonic 17" monitor via HD-SDI?

3) What about audio sync? Do you take audio directly from the MXO to maintain proper audio sync?

Thanks so much for any answers to these questions. I wish there were some extensive reviews and tutorials of this thing. It sounds very promising! :)

Yes.. simliar to HD Link in that it does map pixel for pixel. You can use your Cinema display via DVI as well as monitoring to your Panasonic LH1700 via SDI. It sends audio down the DVI pipeline so stays in sync. Also has RCA outputs for the audio as well as embedded audio in SDI if you have that option on your LH1700. A really great product that I am enjoying very much.

Do you still have a more detailed review of the MXO in the works, as you mentioned in a previous post? I would be interested in reading more about your opinion of the product, including info about what displays, outputs, etc. provide the most accurate HD image, whether the output is close enough to do color correction, and the like.

How are YOU monitoring audio with this device? What is YOUR chosen method? Are you going from the MXO into a mixer and then your speakers?

When you say it sends audio down the DVI pipeline, how does this pan out? I'm probably being dense but I'm trying to picture the hookup.

MXO and iMac?

MXO and iMac?

Does the MXO work with the latest iMacs, that have a mini-DVI output? I'm asking, since Apple's own mini-DVI to DVI adapter is for a DVI-D connector, and there is information on the Net that MXO either uses a DVI-I or DVI-D input connector? From the pics it looked like DVI-I input.
Can someone point out some cheap adapters for DVI-D -> DVI-I? I'm also confused of which way it should be in this case, a female to male adapter, or...?

The Matrox MXO will appear in FCP as an output device both in prefs as well as in the External Video menu in FCP. So, for external video, you choose desktop cinema display and then in the device listing choose the Matrox MXO setting appropriate to your sequence settings. Under external audio, choose Matrox MXO. I then run from the RCA audio connectors on the back of the MXO box to my mixer and from there to powered monitors.

Hope this clarifies. You're not dense; I'm just sometimes too terse.

My understanding is that the MXO does not support DVI-D dual density for desktop cinema display.

I'll test to be certain.

We think that it's a great product as well. They have been selling well which tells us that the market has been needing something like this.

Hello Ned,

Thanks for the feedback, info on the MXO from experienced HVX users is hard to find. On the Maxtor MXO forum a couple HVX200 users have reported problems of flicker with playback of 720 24p footage. Have you experience this problem? What are you using to set up the color and contrast on the playback LCD--FCP, Apple, or Matrox software--and are you satisfied you are getting accurate color reproduction?

Is the flickering a minor nuscance or a constant problem? Any comments on color set up and accuracy?

So would this work with just the 23 Apple Display, or do you still need a special card or something else to get 720 24p.

I am looking at buying one for color correction as well on the 23' Apple Display, will this do the job?

While I see the "flickering" which David describes, I am more concerned about monitoring in YUV color space. I am using it with a Dell 24"; it works of course with an Apple 23. Of course, you will get much greater color accuracy with a calibrated SDI (or Component HD) monitor.
