I've been a Matrox user for years, so today's announcement of Axio LE at $4995 for realtime editing of HD and SD is interesting... I have enjoyed great workflow and speed benefits from using their products in the past.

Matrox explicitly states that they support native editing of DVCPRO HD and HDV, among other formats.

yeah, but it does n´t support MAC OS... so... its a shame...

I think Multibridge Express by Black Magic is a better option (and Chiper)

what you think guys?

Sure you can edit DVCPRO HD if you are digitizing from tape.

If you have another system like AVID or Canopus to read the .mxf files then you could convert them for use with the MATROX. MATROX still will not announce anything about .mxf support. Adobe (Premiere Pro) is also mum on the subject of .mxf support. Its a shame. Matrox is almost there but old Matrox users like me know the drill and I have ordered FCP and switched to Mac.

Umm, the spec sheet says Axio has HD SDI inputs, and can also accept DV-1394 input... so neither of these will let you capture an HD stream from the HVX?!

Multibridge certainly looks like a contender in the Mac world. But since I don't have a Mac, and don't plan on investing in one (even if they are smokin' cool) I'm looking for a Wintel solution.

Hmmm, Avid...

I don't know how things are lately with that product line, but my impression was that you are buying a money pit when you buy into Avid, as compared with a Matrox/PPro solution. That may not be fair, or even true these days, but that is my expectation right now.

Does Avid deliver? Hell yes, if you are willing to tender up enough cash.

I have limited experience with AVID. I know AVID Express will read the .mxf files. But the high-end AVID yes - money pit. Not many industrial programs are cut on a Nitris system. Canopus seems to deliver way more than the Matrox system, many users I have heard from are pi**ed because they bought the AXIO 10 bit system. I guess that is great if you are cutting HDCAM SR or doing high-end feature film effects. Many of these users are also planning on using the HVX but still have no easy way or solution to use the P2 system.

I too am having the same problem choosing which system to go with. I love adobe and the integration, especially even more with the newest release. I work on Avid Xpress HD at work and it is good but when u compare it to Premiere and After Effects combined, there is no question to which one I love the best. I just wish there was a better solution to using Premiere without having to buy expensive hardware. How much is the Matrox Axio LE anyways? Isnt it like in the $5,000-$10,000 range? I just got my HVX and would love to start shooting somethings and editing it together but stuck on what I should get right now. Which computer/software....Guess I will wait and see what Adobe or some other 3rd party comes out with in the next couple of weeks.

I used to use a Digisuite LE system back in the day, and we edited nearly uncompressed. Well, it was so much better just using Firewire on a macs and we were able to switch all of our normal computers to editors without the need for expensive dedicated hardware.

The HVX works with the built in firewire port for editing so there isn't a NEED to get expensive hardware. With the PC at the moment i think you have to buy some sort of hardware (or raylight) to edit with. That should change at NAB though, or there will be massive switching going on. I'm surprised there isn't already, but i guess it takes a lot to admit that hating macs isn't the cool thing to do anymore.

Sure I used to hate them at one point too. I always used to say that I could put together a system for half the costs and it's work just as good, but then the constant premiere and speed razor crashings convinced me otherwise. And i was a certified microsoft system builder!!

I think that PPro and the adobe setup will be much more functional when Cineform and Mainconcept release their plugins/codecs/p2 converters. Also, the dvfilm dude could make a converter program to run the mxf's to the cineform format.

I sit here at my desk patting the ten pound box that contains my Adobe Creative Suite Production Studio Premium and sigh.
I've made my choice for NLE and I know a solution will come along. Heck, I haven't even recieved my camera yet, so what am I worried about?
I look forward to see what is on the horizon at NAB. Main Concept, you go!
Cineform, let me see your stuff!
Axio, do you have what it takes for the money?
Oh, and When is my camera going to get here?

Multibridge looks very good, Fernando, but I'm on a PCI-x g5 dual 2.7. I can see there'll be an adaptor for these macs, but can we get the performance of native PCI- extreme macs? I

Could be wrong but doesnt the cineform codec have to spend time coverting the captured file?

it's a nice half solution for my own personal projects, but I couldnt go online with a system like that for clients.

I need a fairly cheap HD card like Blackmagic for PC that edits DVCPROHD and outputs an SD/HD Stream. I dont really want to switch editors as I have the creative suite too. Hopefully something will come along soon.
