GH4 Matching The GH4 To The C100

I'm trying to figure out what I can do. I have a need for a three camera setup this fall and I would like to have three C100's but the budget wont allow that. If I can get the GH4 to work I'll get another one and use the C100 for main with audio and two GH4's as B and C cams. I do wish I can push the GH4 past ISO 800. Even at 800 it;s a bit to noisy but in 4K and not reframing it's doable. Reframe to 100% and boy does the noise get bigger. I would probably shoot in 4K and not do big reframing. The noise seems to be more present in the dark tones. Color seems to hide it well.

Yeah, I wouldn't punch in in low light. I'd film it at 4k and frame in camera, then knock it down. Neat Video seems to handle the noise very well, as it is confined to the blacks for the most part. It just smooths those blocks out, then I actually apply grain on top to equalize everything.

I like the "grain-like" noise of the C300/100. It's mostly luma only noise, whereas the GH4 shows some chroma noise as well.

I would say one can shoot even at 3200 if they light for it and add a touch of NR in the shadows in post. (Whereas you can shoot on the C100 as high as 25,000 and NR it and still have a usable image). An external recorder helps; I find the C100 very noisy in big areas of a single color without one myself. The C300 has no such issues. The Gh4 has those issues too, but in much brighter light.

Bottom line I think the Gh4 will work fine for most situations. I tend to shoot and light for at 850 anyway on the C300/100, and 800 is fine on the GH4 - noise is present but it's not bad. I'll use the C300 or hire on shooters with C100/C300 cameras for very low light situations however. Like night shoots or running around in a train tunnel.

What I haven't had time to do is literally compare both cameras, shooting in a darkened room. I will soon.

Time to put the C100, GH4 and the A7s side-by-side-by-side for an uber shootout!

matching GH4 to Canon 5D?

matching GH4 to Canon 5D?

I have a two camera interview shoot coming up, and need to match my GH4 to a Canon 5D. Assuming the other shooter is using a standard color setting (not a cine setting), does anyone have GH4 settings that will get me in the ballpark? I am mostly concerned about skin tones, and I don't want to make life difficult for the editor.

I've been using the GH4 and C100 for interviews a lot recently and feel they can be manipulated to look fairly close.

Ungraded shot using Cinelike D and Canon C-log:

This has been graded using Impulz LUTs and FCPx:

The scene was lit by natural window light to the left of the lady with 2 LED lights, 1 to front left and 1 to rear left.

The ungraded image from both cameras to me looks very different, the C100 definitely is more pleasing to my eye. I'm finding the GH4 to be more video like. However, I'm no colour scientist so your milage may differ. Maybe the rumoured GH4 LOG profile coming this year will help.

These look very close. With a bit of color grading, like you did, they match almost perfectly. Ultimately it comes down to if anyone will notice when watching it, and if someone watched this with no information on the two cameras being used it would look seamless. I think these two work perfectly together.

Thanks Daniel.

Thats exactly the theory I apply when editing. Most of the target viewers will watch this video once or twice and as you say won't even notice that 2 cameras were used. Video producers and film makers on the other hand... we're a picky bunch! ;)

Yeah, it's extremely close... well done. Proof positive you can use them side by side in a situation like this. The audience member certainly wouldn't notice, anyway, unless the audience was all Vimeo DPs. lol

Also, using the C100 as the A cam is a good idea as it has more DR and will help the skin tones better. The Gh4 is best as the wide shot as you get more detail in there with an option for a third virtual punch in.

I am very impressed with the Gh4 so far. For what it does and for the price it's outstanding. I can't say the same with the A7s that I am trying out - but fundamentally the two cameras have different purposes.

Nice Drew! The color alone is pretty close and that's the hard part. The GH4 is a very good B Cam I wish it could be pushed more ISO wise but for the money it's a insane value.

You da man Eric! I've been watching your YouTube, Vimeo, and reading your website for a while now. Your news promos are stellar and you create informative content for the topics I care the most about. *Huge fan here*

My boss and I just got two GH4s after selling our soft Canon lenses and muddy looking 7D. We're a huge fan of the Canon Cinema line, particularly the look of the C100. It's just a bit too expensive for our needs. When I did a random search for "match gh4 to c100" I was thinking I would find a random post on Personal View arguing which profiles match the most. Nope. Erik Naso's name comes up once again. I can't wait to see the final outcome and I'm already shooting with your latest recommended settings. Can't wait for more! :)
Thanks Daniel. Glad I could help.

Thanks guys. Yeah I've filmed several interviews now with both cameras and it's getting easier each time to match in post. As Needcreative said the key is using the GH4 for wides.

Could you maybe post a video with GH4 and C100 intercut? Would help me (and probably others too) in my decision making for a new B-Cam...

Yes in the coming week I will post one. I'm off on holidays until Wednesday next week so won't be near my computer until then.

I had a promo that needed some new footage added so I decided to use the GH4 in 4K. The testimonials are all C300 C Log and the GH4 in 4K is the anchors on set. I updated the original blog post with settings I used and how I matched the cameras in post. I also had a few Panasonic HPX370 shots and the tail was a 70D time lapse.

Erik,

what was the sharpness settings used in the anchors shot where you used cine V? Was it -3 or -2 similar to your cine D settings.
