GH2 Matching GH2 with Z1U HDV resolution

Final is Blue ray+DVD. What is the best shooting mode on Gh2 to match with Z1U. I am on Avid MC. Thanks for sharing you thought and experiences.

1920x1080 50i FSH

Knowing that Z1U could shoot both in NTSC and PAl but I used to shoot at 60i and capture with Avid MC project at 59.97. Kind of noob here but could you explain more? shooting with 1920X1080 50i on both camera? I am in NTSC land.

Aaahh sorry
then, you can shoot with 1920X1080 60i on both camera, no?

good luck

Yes, As always shooting with that 1920X1080 60i on Z1U, I also tried with 720X60i, 24P, 1920X1080 60i on GH2.

What experiences could you share with avid work flow, mixing different resolution footage.

I am thinking to add a GH1, making 3 camera shoot. Is Gh1 capable of shooting 1920X1080 60i and matched well with gh2. Do I need to hack it or not to make it possible?

Both the GH2 and the Z1U shoot at the same resolution, 1920x1080i. So no mixing of resolution. Iedit my GH2 and FX-1(the prosumer Z1U) footage together all the time. That said, they can, depending on the scene's lighting, render color and exposure/contrast levels differently-as would any different model cameras. I get the best exposure for each camera and if needed, color correct in post. Also, AVCHD is not the easiest to edit, if you have the Avid dnxhd or whatever their intermediate codec is called, it might be be better to convert the AVCHD footage to that. (I use PPro w/Mecrcury playback so not needed for me).

The Z1U is HDV i think so it does not have the same resolution as the GH2 exept when it is in 720p mode.
The GH2s 1920x1080i 17mbps, HDV is 1440x1080 after being recorded to tape,i still put edited GH2 film to tape as well as BD,GH2 1920X1080 material holds up fairly well but still loses a little quality, 24P GH2 material has more resolution still but if put on tape it will all look the same as it drops back to HDV resolution.Blu ray hold up the origional GH2 sharpness resolution. The HDV cam i have is the Canon HV30 imo the best consumer hdv cam ever and it has a sharper picture than any of the Sony semi pro models i have owned in the past.

I recently shot a theater production with 2 GH2s, 1 Sony Z5U and 1 Sony FX1. Both Sonys are HDV and their frame size is 1440x1080 and not 1920x1080. I let the Sonys shoot in 60i while the GH2s were shooting 24p. I then captured the Sony footage and ran them through DVFilm Maker to deinterlace and output 24p, which was then used with the GH2 footage. The result looked great.

Then on another project, I didn't bother deinterlacing/converting to 24p the Sony footage. Just dropped it on a 23.976 timeline along with my GH2 footage in Premiere CS5, rendered and it looked great too.

Sorry, the Z1 is 1440px but the pixel aspect ratio is 1.333 and is treated by editing software as being 1920. My bad. That said, the two match up pretty well nonetheless. For me, one thing make epecially the Sonys 'apparent rez' break down is when it has to struggle with low light and its iris full open. I never use the FX-1 in progressive mode, but if I remember correctly, the Z1/FX-1 camera shoots better interlace than it does in progressive mode.

In Avid, I have to capture Z1U with 1920X1080i 59.97 project. This project will import footage shooting with GH2 AVCHD 1080i modes, not for 24p. To do that, I had to make a new project setting as 23.97. then drop that import files to 1080i bin-project.

Glad to know that premier do same thing. Are the color matching OK between them? I found cinema mode from Gh2 is close to Profile 4 in ZIU.

I'm not sure if Premiere does the same thing as Avid based on what you said. I can drop 23.976 footage from my GH2 onto a 29.97 timeline and still work with it without rendering, and vice versa. Premiere doesn't really care about the settings of the imported footage...it takes them all.

As for color matching, I didn't attempt to match them in-camera because I knew I was going to color correct in post.

Hi all, come back to this tread cause I didn't get rid of My ZIU yet This old camera will be using as main A for me with gh1,gh2 as B-roll cameras.

So the best workflow in avid would be:
- make a Hdv 1920x1080 /59.97i projet , use it for capture ZIU
- make a hdv 1920x1080 / 23.976 project for import, AMA for Gh1, gh2
- open Z1U bin and import those footage in to 23.976 gh1&2 project
and here I go? Am I missing something? In the past I did in reverse way by dropping Gh1,2 in Z1U project. The question asked this time is I still can hold the quality of 24p of GH' cameras but is that possible for Avid software Up the resolution from old camera Z1U which is 1440x1080i?

Thanks for all have answered and educated me
