C300: Matching c300 footage to a 5d mk iii question.

Hi, guys. I am about to begin using a c300/5d mkiii shooting package for a documentary. I am shooting canon log on the c300. Is there anything I should consider doing in the 5d to get the footage to match as close as possible. We are shooting 24fps.

Thanks as always to a great community.

John

You might consider using the Technicolor Cinestyle profile for the 5D. Just do a search for the download.

Shoot a true gray card in every scene with both cameras. It will help get them close in post. If you have a color chart shot that too.

You may struggle if you're A/Bing the cameras together - for example, when using both cameras simultaneously in an interview.

In my experience, 5DIII material looks soft and plasticky when directly cut with the C300/100 - let us know if you find otherwise.

We shot a bunch of interviews this way and ended up ditching all of the 5DIII material.

I think the issue is one simply of resolved image - increasing sharpness didn't help, as the information just wasn't there.

We used the cinestyle profile - which is relatively flat and can grade nicely as a standalone (ie not intercut with a C Cam) picture.

As I say, if you find otherwise, please post back.

Cheers,

Ben.

With log on the C300, shoot the 5DM3 in Neutral with sharpness down all the way and saturation and contrast down a bit (e.g. Prolost or Philip Bloom dslr settings.) Do a custom white balance off a digital grey card for each.

Bottom film here (w/couple) is two C300's plus a 1DX. 5DM3 will be a touch more contrasty and have ~1 stop less dynamic range (also be a touch softer) than the 1DX. The 1DX footage did get a touch of sharpening in post.

I second what Jon said. Also, if you are intercutting the footage for an interview or such, you will want to use the 5D for the close-up with a low depth of field. The close-up and low depth of field hides the limited dynamic range and makes the softness appear more natural.
