Mastering

I'm in Premiere CS4.1 and have edited my masterpiece using the AVCHD MOVs right out of the camera. A decade ago, we would have made a master to tape. What is the standard proceedure now?

Do I archive the CS4.1 project and save the stock or do most of you make a Master using something like CineForm AVI with all I Frames and do your Vimeo/Youtube prints from that?

I do mastering of all projects at our production company and I sort material into these folders:

Master=Uncompressed video files in full resolution.
Original files=The files from the camera.
Encoded=Files in lower resolution encoded for the web or similar.
Audiomix=Sound files and mix sessions.
Avid=Avid project or FCP/Premiere projcet.
Workfolder=All other files like AE projects, graphic files...

Everything is stored on two mirrored discs (WD Elite Passport mostly) and put in our safe.

Thank you for the answers...much appreciated. I have the choice of codec (uncompressed with a codec???) in CS4.1 on Windows of either V210 or UYVY. Which should I pick and why? Again, thanks for the help.

UYVY is 16-bit per channel 4:2:2
V210 is 10-bit per channel 4:2:2

It seems that v210 should take up less space.

Since your source material is 8-bit 4:2:0 either choice should be sufficent even with heavy color grading to maintain quality.

You could use h.264 to create your master if you're not concerned about having it easily in an editable format when you pull back from your harddrive. Use a High profile level 5.1 vbr 2-pass H.264 with your target bitrate of 50+ and the MAX as high as it will go. This route will save you lots of space, and this file can still be transcoded in Adobe media encoder if you had to spit it out to another format, or even tape.

Render out the audio as a wav file, since i'm not sure how close a 320Kbps AAC sounds compared to a 1.3mbps Stereo wav.
