Marques Brownlee checks out the Red Raven

Which now brings us to 2 :)

FWIW, I oftentimes enjoy Dustylense's comments -- and what's an internet forum without some sarcasm and conflict?? DVX seems to have the right balance of mixed personalities, levels of experience, and intermittent verbal diahhrea to keep me coming back for information and entertainment ;)

I agree, the petty remarks and bickering are actually fun for me, but I do realize it's not everyone's cup of tea. Back to the subject at hand. I do think the Raven will be a pretty solid camera and I think RED has the right idea with this one.

Of course they did the right thing. Look at the amount of views of the Raven footage "Carrion". 78,000 views posted over a month ago Dec 4. Now look at the views of MKBHD's video "first impressions of Red Raven 4.5". 385,000 views post Jan 9th. 5 days and 5 times the exposure. All by giving "who" a camera to play with for a day. What did Red announce this camera as? 4k for the masses. By using Twitter and other outlets. Now they spread the message through a very well established Youtube personality. And the guy did a good job telling about a camera in simple consumer understanding.

No, it's not about selling Raven's to privileged hobbyist (or maybe it is) and the average consumer. But it is about getting exposure for the product. This cost RED virtually zero in marketing for that exposure. And I think it's a good thing for the type of tech that is inside the Raven to be discussed by such means of MKBHD's channel. Such exposure to masses will have masses asking for such performance in lower priced cameras.

So more power to them. 5x's the message than Red's own channel and promo piece. That's a win. No matter "who" delivered it.

^yep, makes sense. I think RED is doing a much, much better job than Blackmagic right now in terms of marketing. People said Carrion was about lighting/art direction/skill (all true), where as off the cuff street shots tell more about a cameras inherent flaws, but from a marketing standpoint, it's much more appealing to produce something sexy that looks, well... produced. Add in the exposure with this video and they are off to the races, while BM looks a bit foolish at this point. No hate for Blackmagic either, I quite like them. Just calling it like I see it.

Now we all know who he is...

You are looking at this from a marketing perspective, others are looking at this from a camera users perspective. Different viewpoints. Both have merit. From a marketing perspective, we can all understand why Red would give him cameras to showcase, but this is a camera forum, not YouTube and many of us a solely interested in the camera. 'Who' he is has a bearing on that too. And in that department, he doesn't carry as much weight.

I've been a subscriber of MKBHD's channel for about 3 years now and have witnessed his evolution as a content creator moving from dslrs to bigger cameras like the C100 and eventually to red cameras to shoot his videos. Out of hundreds of videos he has mentioned his gear a few times and it was late last year that he made a video specifically about his red camera under the top 10 tech products video series. After all that is what his channel is about, tech products.

Today his is one of the top youtubers, even featured on youtube's own 2015 celebration video. Overall I enjoy his top notch content even though I'm not into most of the products he reviews. This being said I see no reason why Red shouldn't collaborate with him.

@ DVXuser members not interested in all of the above: Ignorant and disapproving comments are almost always the majority of comments no thanks to anonymity, the plague of internet. So when I see a comment like "A monkey in a tree" (a misunderstanding on my part, see below) about a successful person I cannot help but share my thoughts since I happen to know a bit more about the matter.

That comment was about BlackMagic Design failings & had nothing to do with the YouTuber. Had it been it the context you describe the racist overtone would have caused an explosive reaction from this community.

dustylense gets on a thread on we spend our time taking about his posts rather than what he thread was about? What shame to let this build up and let it hijack threads.

It is definitely harming this forum. Unfortunately the mods who I have spoken with say there are rules against personal attacks, which nevertheless are broken, but no rules against trolling or flaming. Most forums ban both as a simple matter of survival.

Something to keep in mind, its one thing to have 1MM views on any video. Its another entirely to have several million subscribers. That indead is amazing!

Oh wow...seriously? You did not mean to post that. It could be easily interpreted as racist, regardless of your real meaning.

Can we please have this comment removed? Trees are part of the monkeys natural habitat. I realize that it wasn't intentional, but the fact that you somehow managed to put that into a racial context is actually one of the more racist things that I've read in awhile. Rather ironic. Lol

He's wrong about "live TV" and having to "dig cables underground" for 4K. All the cable companies need to do is to upgrade a client's modems to the 3.0 standard (and 3.0 isn't even the latest tech - 3.1 is). 3.0, IIRC, can deliver up to 3 Gbps and one only needs about 20 Mbps from YouTube and about 35 Mbps from Vimeo, the difference due to the compression used on YouTube (VP9) vs. Vimeo (H264).

Those are different things - "fiber to home" does require laying the fiber lines, first to a neighborhood, and then to an SFR off a control box. However, this is the very high end of the current broadband infrastructure. But, "live 4K" doesn't need that much speed or fiber-to-home. With the latest compression technology - Google/YouTube VP9 or HEVC/H265 - one needs about 20 Mpbs (and, some say as little as 12, with some tweaks) and broadband over coaxial cable requires very little infrastructure improvement to make a next step up.

Here's Comcast's official PR release from December, 22, 2015 (making it less than a month old .. highlights are mine)

By Tony Werner, Executive Vice President & Chief Technology Officer in Technology

The next-generation technology that will deliver gigabit Internet speeds moved from the laboratory to the living room late last month when we installed what we believe to be the world’s first DOCSIS 3.1 modem on a customer-facing network.

At a home in the Philadelphia area, we took the next important step forward in delivering gigabit speed broadband over our hybrid fiber coaxial network. The test used the standard cable connections that we have in homes across the country. All we needed was a new modem, a software upgrade to the device that serves that neighborhood, and a few good engineers.

Two months ago, we wrote that the future of gigabit technology was nearly here. Now we’ve seen it in action on our network.

We will continue testing over the coming months, as we get ready to start delivering DOCSIS 3.1-powered service to our customers. Before the end of 2016, we will begin offering a new gigabit speed choice that works over the existing connections in our customers’ homes in several parts of the country.

The beauty of DOCSIS 3.1 is that it is backwards compatible, so no digging up streets or backyards. This technology, when combined with the extensive upgrades we have already completed on our advanced Hybrid Fiber-Coaxial network, will provide more gigabit choices for our customers.

"One of the more racist things I've read in a while." LOL

No offense to anybody, but I'm sure I am not the only one aware of the overtones of that original post. Anyway, whatever.

Back to the topic...I watch Marques' channel regularly for his reviews. I won't own a RED anytime soon, but the review was useful...good to know the camera can be operated by a one man band, which contradicts much of what I have heard about REDs. In this case the operator is also the talent. It says a lot about how RED is responding to the competition.
