Mark II vs the Canon A1.........

The good thing about te mkii is that it's not as clean as red. That might be an advantage but then again you can always dirty up clean footage.

In Darge's comparison, nearly every Red shot has a hell of a lot more noise than the corresponding 5DII shot, but also great deal more resolution.

With good lighting, composition, and dirty post work, I've gotten better results at giving my footage a look closer to film.

For this reason my hvx 200 is being sold today in exchange for another one of these 5ds. I'ts just not natural to get an image of this quality out of this little still cam.

I don't know how Richard processed his footage but I'm very sorry to dissapoint. The mkii doesn't compare in this area when viewing a raw file. Detail resolving or image clarity is just another area where it can't compete on a raw for raw basis.

Not only that but the mkii has a fair share of noise in darks.

Raw for raw comparisons with both cameras at their best in production and post would clearly show the vast differences in image quality and fidelity.

First hand experience here.

oh it was just waaaaaaaaay too clean for that purpose.

RED is my #1 choice for industrials, commercials, music videos, comedies.... but for horror, drama, etc... i prefer a dirtier optical path...

5DII is very low noise. Relatively low res, but very low noise. Even at high ISO. Without enough light, at too high an ISO, Red is noisy as f*ck. Noise isn't the worst thing in the world though.

Don't worry, buddy, you've haven't destroyed my world by lecturing me on the infinite superiority of the $17,500 Red camera to my lowly $2500 5DII. My ego is not that fragile.

Not to continue allowing this thread off track, but Kholi what tests have you done lowlight with the 5d?

When I first got my camera I was getting all sorts of vertical striping and weird lowlight noise especially in the blacks. Now, a month in I am able to shoot at a 1.8 and have the image recorded be slightly brighter than my eyes with VERY little grain. I have had success with these settings. shutter (1/50), ISO (1250), F-stop (1.8). The last two nights I have shot a lot and have come back blown away by the utter lack of grain.

One thing I didn't mention - a lot of the noise I was getting went away when I turned off highlight tone priority. I know a lot of people sing its praises, but it really seemed to put noise in my images.

Lastly - I'm not sure what sense this makes technically, but this is just my experience. The thing this camera excels at is detail. The more detail and color I have in my shots, the less noise I get. Not sure why, but a flat image seems to have WAY more grain than a contrasty complicated image. That may sound crazy, but I have found it to be true time and time again.

Mkii cartellinid to a Red. Daylight, pan, tilt, extremely lowlight. My personal settings avoiding wrong isos. Zeiss nikons on both camera.

Red processed raw out of redcine. Recordings at 250 iso to 800 iso ramped up to 1280 iso or lower to compare to mkii at several different isos. Shot for shot the red is cleaner at lower isos. The mkii is cleaner than red at 800 iso and above. When processed properly red is cleaner when the raw is procssed (. Without nr) from a native 320, 400, 500 iso to 800, 1000, 1280 in redcine.

Like Richard it was quick and dirty but Richards tests were using 2k proxies. Mines were taken through redcine (shot at 4k HD) and iso processed before being kicked out to 1080s.

Red is based on redcode. The image doesn't shine until you post it properly.

Mkii is great but try shooting at a lower iso then bringing it up in post.

That's all I'm saying. Take it or leave it, either way works.
