C500: Mark II -- relay record bug?

I don't usually run two cards in the camera, but yesterday I was, and I made sure it was set for Relay Record as I started on my day. As the card started to get full, I got a warning saying that it was about to switch cards, this went on for several takes. All good. Then I hit play (Edit: I hit Record!) for the next take and it said, card full, and wouldn't switch to the B card. I'm pretty sure this has happened to me before. Anyone else experience the camera not switching cards automatically?

For playback I don't think it automatically spans across cards. I think you actually have to tell the camera to switch cards(slot select button).

Interesting. I hope somebody else can test and confirm this ASAP. If this is a reproducible bug, and someone is on a paying live-event shoot... hang on to those proxies for dear life.

Assuming card B wasn't actually full (like never formatted), were you by any chance right at the very end of Card A's space and also recording in a high resolution and framerate?

Just a guess, but the system may think it doesn't have enough space to start writing on Card A and therefore won't switch to Card B either. (A bug usually fixed in FW.)

Next time that happens, try using the camera's lowest resolution and framerate possible - which would provide more space on the end of the card - to see if it will start recording and automatically switch again.

The B card was formatted and empty. Its very possible it was just at the end very end of the A card...but it was a little shocking in the moment that it just didn't recognize that there was a card ready to record. Luckily it wasn't an event...just take number 45 of two non-pro actors gazing at each other. :-)

I've had a couple of cameras not record even with 1-2-3 GBs left on the card. (But nothing over 4K resolution.)

I'd assume this is mostly done to protect the card (kind of like how they recommend using up to no more than 90% of your hard drives).

These cameras should deliver confidence - it makes me ill that even the latest and greatest are not delivering that. Where are canon they should be biking you a new one

Were you shooting real-time or off-speed? With the original, you could not dual-slot or relay-record when over or under-cranking.

I just checked the A card and it had 7GB of space left...seems like it shouldn't have even read as full. Still doesn't make sense that it's not switching over to the second card...

I'm sure you've already checked, but if not here are some notes worth reading to see if they are applicable to you.
