Manufacturing, Shipping, etc.

Here is a question I have...maybe there is an answer from Jim & Crew.

They (red) are taking preorders.

1) How many can they press at once? (Not sure thats the right word)
i.e. If I order number 601, and they manufacture in quantities of only 200, i would have to wait a few rounds, etc before they get to me...especially if there is a specific number they have to have before starting the press...or, even worse, building one at a time if it is hand assembled.
(though this can beat sloppy mass production machine processes that seem to have plauged apple with issues recently with the new macbooks, of which I am holding off with that order.)

2) If I preorder, how is the material shipped? Anything less than registered dhl in Hungary is asking for it to be "lost" or rather stolen.
We have serious issues with regular post here. (from first hand experience)
{God help me when the actual camera ships...that would have to be dhl for sure, registered, insured, hand delivered, etc. :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

All I can say is there is no downside to a reservation (fully refundable at any time for any reason) to insure you don't have to wait "forever" to get yours. Registered DHL is fine. We will have a RED office in Prague and service centers throughout the world.

Hope that helps.

Thats good to know that you will have a center that close.

Prauge really is the number 1 city that Americans set up in when coming to the eastern part of the E.U.
Unfortunately Budapest isnt quite there yet...give it another decade. :)

Thanks for the info.

I am very interested in this camera, however, I don't know if I'll have all of the funds available when it is released. If I put a deposit down now, will I be required to buy one when my number is up or can I delay the purchase after that but still maintain some form of priority. My concern is a possible long delivery time if I don't book until my funds are available and am far down in the queue.

Thanks for any info you can provide,
Cameron

His request is quite similar to mine.
I suppose there are a few people out there that are so close or right there, but yet need to cross their t's and dot their i's before reserving...yet are wondering about potential delays if they dont reserve fast enough.

i.e. right now I am contemplating a move to the U.k. or staying and buying a house in Hungary. Both ways I should have the funds...yet there is a potential that the venture takes a bit more than anticipated.

So I dont want to get in que just to have to withdraw my money and throw it back in at a later date. Yet I have similar concerns about shipping time, etc. once I do (why this thread was started.)

Im not overly worried about it...as this is a cool camera, and I know it will eventually make it into my hands, but at this price point, I think there are a few of us that are financially able to truly consider this...but have these questions.

Most people in North America couldn't afford to buy a new car either without consumer financing. What would be just as Revolutionary for Red would be to do what the auto industry does and setup the equivalent of GMAC Financing. In fact the financing arm of an auto company is usually the most profitable part. RDC3 Financing could allow folks like cambrose to get their Reds immediately and be driving ..err.. shooting with them right out of the gate.

yes indeed. But its important not to treat Red like a car.. Cars dont make most people money, they just transport you to where you make money (for most people). Owning the Red camera not only will make you the coolest kid on your block, but if your smart you can earn a large majority of the investment back on rentals alone.

This is going a bit toward a differnt topic posted elsewhere, but is it clear now about the rental?

Is it cool to rent it out if you are not a rental company? Which is the safest way, them to have insurance, you, both?
I cant imagine departing with it, i think I would have to go on the shoot. (Not sure someone could imagine that.)

I live in Budapest and am wondering how I can realistically make the money back from the purchase. Im absolutely not hooked up in the industry here (Im not sure if it even exist.) I have been on sabbatical the past year doing some farming and getting away from 10 years in NewMedia/Broadcast.

But this Red thing has lit a fire, and Im practically ready to throw money at it (knowing in the back of my mind I will probably need to factor in for a 10k editing system from apple in the future. I need something anyway.)

More away from rentals, is anyone in Budapest or know anything about how to position yourself in the market.

Im a bit of a trick.
Im not a camera operator. period.
This would initially be for my own humor, and for some projects I have in mind, but after the initial outlay of money for a full system, I wouldnt mind getting a return on it.

It seems my only go would be to rent it out...(I can imagine it coming with a chain, here in hungary even the grocery carts have a chain on them, and you have to stick a coin in to let it unlock...people arenet to trusted here...not saying there not trustworthy, just a bit different...)
The Red chain...comes with producer. :)

Seriously though, I had mentioned elsewhere for some dvd course for dummies that can get someone like me up and rolling.
Not sure how much I could charge or who I could charge (industry wise), but I am interested.

I will stop now that I have babbled on about this enough...

Oh, something funny on a sidenote: it appears I was moderated on another forum, I just found out, because I *replied* to someones post in a panasonic forum (best place I could at the time) and sounded like a Red sales rep. {wrote them back explaining things so this should get straightened out}, just thought it was ironic, as I havent worked for anyone for the past year.

Over here in the UK it is fairly common for Production Companies to rent their kit out when they're not using them. Sometimes they'll offer operators/assistants etc. with kit but more usually it'll just be dry-hire. As for insurance, you will have your own anyway for when you shoot your stuff. The usual deal when renting to a third party is either they provide their own insurance (and show you all the necessary details, certificate etc.) or they pay to use yours (usually something like 12% of hire cost).

Jim, do you have any plans on having a RED office within EU?
I'm just thinking about warranty, repairs, maintenance, support and other such consumer protection issues and costs.
Btw, camera would be cheaper to European buyers if it would be assembled in EU. We have 4.9% import duty for videocameras and if it has digital input from somewhere else than the sensor, it is considered as vcr and import duty is 14%.

In one of his replies he said they will have an office in Prauge for starters.
