manual focus problems

I've seen a couple other folks on the forums having this problem and am wondering if anyone has a solution.

I manually focus my 100b in the traditional way by zooming to z99, focusing, and then pulling back out to frame my shot. I notice that often a) the wider shots are less in focus than the tightest shots; and b) when I pull out wider and then zoom back in for a medium close shot (say around z80-something) the focus has softened and needs to be refocused in order for the shot to be as crisp as it is in a tight close-up.

This was a problem when I first bought the camera, and I sent it in to be checked. The Panny repair guys assured me there was nothing wrong with the camera. It doesn't always happen, but it happens often enough to be a problem, and since I'm noticing a few other folks on the forums are reporting a similar issue, I'm wondering if anyone knows why this happens and how to correct it?

thanks!

You're not accidentally bumping the focus ring, are you? I've done that when I'm set to manual zoom. Sorry, just looking for the most obvious answer.

Firstly.. Do not mind me please if i tell you something you already know or tried..

Zoom in for medium shot. Focus it. Shot it. without moving the camera, zoom back out. Focus shall be sharp for both. When you are at the wider angle, depth of field will expand so both for you and the camera, it will be harder ( not HARD. just harder... ) to focus, to find differences between objects.

Don't get angry, but there may not be a problem with the camera. Maybe you can tell us more about the problem... And maybe with some screenshots?

Thanks for the thought, but, no, sadly, that isn't it. ;-}

It occurs when my hands are nowhere near the focus ring, after changing the zoom (using the rocker zoom).

If your camera is still under warranty, send it in for repair/adjustment right away.
Don't know where you're located, but in So. Cal area, Digitron is the best, ask for Eric.
It may be as simple as a software alignment or as bad as a new lens assembly, but it's not going to go away by itself. My 100A had to replaced because of a bad lens assembly right out of the box...it happens. The QC on these cams varies a lot, but once you get a good one, your set for quite a while.
Hope this helps.
