Manfrotto Fig Rig for A1?

Whats up guys?
Has anyone used the Manfrotto FigRig for their A1 or any other camera?

I want to have something to hold other than the handle on my A1 for when i snowboard. I was wondering if this would do the job to steady the picture better for those follow along shots when i am riding with the rider.

Or is there any other steadicams that you would recommend using for shooting snowboarding?
We shoot alot of footage from tripod in a setup place, but every once and awhile we want to shoot some ride alongs to get some different types of shots.

I've seen the FigRig in action with a DVX, but not with the A1. I've never been entirely convinced of the its use as a stabilizing device and $300 seems excessive for what's essentially a wheel. You should check out the DVMultiRig Pro or one of the similar DVTec product, there's a few reviews in the Articles section of the forum.

I had a go of one with my DVX at a dealer some months ago & other than the excessive price I found it cumbesome, besides for event work it would attract too much attention. I've stuck to my old shoulder brace. For stabiliser & crane type shots I use a heavy duty Manfrotto monopod.

I've used it with the A1 before. It is nothing amazing, but it is definitely better than trying to handhold the camera

I had one and was using it with my A1, it is really good, only if you buy the controller as well as the clamp. With practice., it is a great tool. It is better if you can buy the long 501 camera plate. Because of the heavy front of the A1

It is the only hand held support that can be mounted on a tripod, you can't do that with a Merlin or glidecam or a spiderbrace. It is great for wedding, when you need to go from tripod to hand held in a second .

It gets into places that most others can't, like in a car.

Thanks for the help guys.

but yea, thats what i keep hearing about it that it really isn't worth the $300 because it is just a wheel.
Do they usually have them at the big camera stores so i could test it out.
(Samys, BelAirCamera, etc, those are the main ones around me)

Do you know by chance if you can rent these anywhere to test out before i drop the $300 into it, or if they have the DVMultiRig Pro i can test out somewhere?

There are SO many better options than this thing. What I hate about it is it's ROUND. If you're going to mount a handheld camera to a device like this, why not make it square so you can at least use the vertical and horizontal members as a visual aid to stay level?

.

I have a Figrig and find it too cumbersome and uncomfortable to use. I've tried it with a DVX, Z1 and A1 and simply don't like it. Some of my other shooters like it, so it could be a personal ergonomics thing.

My preference for handheld run & gun support is the Jimmy Box (http://www.jimmybox.com), which I'd recommend for your snowboarding POV. Got one a few years ago for a behind-the-scenes road shoot with a band and never looked back. You can adjust the support arm and handle to a position of your liking, you can stuff a wireless lav receiver, portable hard drive or battery in it, it's lightweight and it's fairly inexpensive.
