Man, I just got a taste that I'm not in my youth anymore....

Charli

cool little "title"
I made a reference that I wanted to hear some Sandra Dee music and the reply I got was, "Like in the movie "Grease?"

I had to think for a moment what that reference was to "Grease" then I thought, oh, yeah, that song titled: Sandra Dee.

Now, for the record, I was born the year Sandra Dee made "Tammy and the Doctor." I didn't see her movies until they ran them on television when I was older. But boy, did I feel old when I heard the reference to the "Grease" movie.

Geez, where did the years go by?

what is Grease?

I don't know, but it apparently turns into BACON!

Point them to the Kevin Spacey-driven Bobby Darin flick Beyond the Sea...

Remember: there's a generation out there (one behind us) who thinks that "Turn the Page" is a Metallica song.

Abbott and Castello, I think? Oh gawd, jeez.

How did I end up watching so many old movies? Every summer we went NOWHERE (except two times that I can remember) growing up. That means all summer day I'd be stuck inside a house with nothing to do.

Everyday at 3pm like clockwork KTVT channel 11 in Dallas/Ft.Wth. area played old movies for a week. Godzilla, martial arts, alien flicks, Sandra Dee, Cary Grant, Dracula, Mummy, Frankenstein - that's how I know so many old movies.

I was bored and watched them every single day for two hours. Otherwise, I would have no whahoo of an idea who Abbott & Castello were, or the Andrew Sisters or anything pre60s.

I believe it did me service to love movies but DANG when the dude said "Sandra Dee like in Grease" I felt my age and then some!

I don't know what you guys are talking about, but I gotta go get ready for my Justin Beiber concert. But you'd know that by now because I'm tweeting about it in real time.

Bevis and Butthead is something that should be left and forgotten IMO.

Aside from us who study past cultures (like film buffs), who really knows the pop culture of past generations? I somewhat know of Abbot and Costello (mainly from my film classes), and to be honest I don't know who Sandra Dee is.

Maybe it's because I'm young, but I'm tired of hearing the older (than me) generations constantly telling me I need to learn their culture, that it's extremely important that I learn it. I try to because I'm a filmmaker and artists work off of the past. But so much of of the younger culture is flooding towards me, so much so I have little time to digest it all. Yes some of it is mindless dribble, some of it is saturated with Paris Hilton and reality shows, but some of the new stuff is worth spending time on.

Also keep in mind that newer generations tend to process older works in different ways. Films, songs, and even comedy skits were written differently for the current young generation of it's time. But with changing times some of these works just don't hold up. Mind you Abbot and Costello skits still make me crack up laughing, but it's definitely presented in a different way.

Anyways I'm rambling. At least we're not all this clueless:

Me: I saw the Third Man the other day, great movie.
Development Exec: Is that the Marlon Wayans movie?
---------------------------
Development Exec: I'm not interested in any movie made before 1980.
Me:...uh......
---------------------------
Me: I want it to be like Dr. Strangelove.
Development Exec: That's probably a great movie but I don't think I'd want to make it.

If you don't know Sandra Dee then you don't know "Gidget" or the nickname "Moondoggie" and why am I still talking to you? lol

singing...."A girl needs a boy she can count on...." Yes, I watched all the Frankie Avalon and Annette beach movies... 3pm whole week of 'em.

I was shooting hoops with a neighborhood kid & talking about cartoons. He asked "who is woody woodpecker?" God bless channel 5 wnew when I was growing up.

In the early 80's I was digging through albums (remember those?) at a local shop. Two high school girls were opposite me. One picked up a copy of Abbey Road, showed it to here friend and exclaimed "Look! Paul McCartney was in a band before Wings!"
