Hey Jack! Interesting on your take for it being suited for a guy. I'll go into more of that below.I think she's a little better but the writing was suited more to the guy. Particularly the blood on the suit lines.
Sound was a little distracting to me in both clips. I know it's just an audition but it made it hard for me to lose myself in the performances. I didn't find the level or presence of the ambient noise distracting. Just that it kept cutting in and out. Really all you need is an ambient bed to keep the noise consistent. If your on FCP there's plenty included.
It does look pretty slick and I'm definitely interested to see the web series!
As for the sound, I totally agree. We recorded room tone after we shot and there was an ambient track in there on her clip. I used my Sony headset to do the edit and quick mix. The problem that I realized, after uploading to Youtube, is that the music and ambient were too low when listening through the laptop speakers. I wanted to change it but you can't swap out the video clips on Youtube like you can on Vimeo.
I think sound is one of my weak points. I need somebody who is good with mixing and all things sound.
When I originally came up with the idea for Zimm, I wrote the character as a woman.I like the males look better, the jokes were all seemingly written for a female though, and she seemed to read a little better.
Tough call for sure, what was the character originally written as?
We tried finding an actress last year but we couldn't find anybody. Since we were up against the MonsterFest deadline, my wife suggested that we change the character to a guy because it would be easier to find a guy who could pull it off. The guy had just read for another project I was working on and he seemed like the perfect fit.
The funny part is, when we cast him, the only changes I made to the script was to find/replace all the references from she to he. I even kept the name of the character the same.
Before shooting the whole series, my gut was pulling me towards going back and seeing if we could find the right woman to play the role and see if it would work or not.
