when i used the a1 before, if i went to log and capture and just let it run, it would detect every time stop and record had been pressed and make it a different "untitled file"

now, it doesn't do that.

what do i have to change in camera or in final cut to get this result?

load your clip into the viewer.

Select DV Start/Stop detect in the Mark drop down menu it will add markers to every pause point.

Also, if you shoot in Free run TC mode on your camera, in the FCP user prefs you can set the capture to create a new clip on each TC break...

I've been having this problem as well and even when I tried your first method of hitting DV Start/Stop, it didn't separate the clips in the right place, only sometimes did it catch where the clip started and stopped.

What are the advantages/disadvantages to using REC Run and FREE run? I've always used REC run, but that's only because I didn't know any better.
