Making a D90 DVD

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I burned a D90 movie, from imovie and then stuck it in my DVD player and nothing happened. It played fine on my macbook though. Is there more that I need to know about this to make DVD's? Thanks Clay.

There are 3 ways of making a DVD with the material of the D90:

1. Downscaling to SD with a 16:9 aspect ratio on a regular DVD
2. A HD-DVD 1280x720 on a regular DVD. But this works only with some Bluray-Player (not all) and the Playstation
3. 1280x720 burned on a Bluray-Disc - only with a Bluray-Player as well

Thanks Charles and capice.
I used 960x540, which is the largest export setting I saw in imovie. I didn't see any 16x9 options in imovie and I'm not sure if it was the plus or minus DVD, as I got it from a friend. I'll have to find out.

How did you get past the frame rate issues? I live in a PAL country.

I use Adobe Premiere to edit, so I end up speeding the video by 4% to bring the 24 fps to 25fps.

Export 720x576 (16:9 pixel size)

Then I encode to DVD using Nero Vision.

The framerate of 24p isn´t really an issue - neither in a PAL-Land. Most of the Hollywood-Movies on DVD are in 24p and they play well on almost every DVD-Player in Europe...

Burning a 24p as a 25p DVD without any conversion creates awful jerky video.

Some movies are either sped up/down, or pull downed or frame interpolated. I'm not sure how to do the laters.

I think there's a better option to what I'm doing (speeding up by 4%) but I'm not sure what I would do in Adobe Premiere/Nero Vision to keep it the same length but with an extra frame. Mattsand has a free plugin for Final Cut but I'm stuck in PC land. Any ideas? If I can't in Premiere/Nero Vision, What free software?

There will be no awfulness, jerkiness... or whatever. Just master a SD 24p-DVD (forget PAL + NTSC). Every newer DVD-Player or HDTV can handle + display 24p-DVDs without problems - in Europe or Timbuktu.

But if you absolutey insist in converting to PAL 25p, the best solution I know is the Canopus Procoder. Good + inexpensive => PC Express. Better + faster, but a "big ticket" => Procoder Pro 3...
