Make a flippy thing.

Seriously, my Digital 8 camera has a "digital effects" mode that works as a flippy thing as do most other consumer cameras. With all the new mini-35 style devices coming out, it would be pretty sweet, especially since it would mean not losing an extra generation of compression.

I bet the code is super easy to write, too. Just a horizontal flip. Would really make things easier for a lot of us.

you're talking about making the image flip in the VF? Or are you talking about some sort of effect in post to write code for?

Some sort of "digital effect" in camera. Sorry, when I wrote that I was spaced out (sick and taking medicine which makes me groggy!)

Cheap cameras have a simple effect which flips the image. It would be easy to add the same thing to the DSP for a professional camera; it's just that there hasn't been a reason to until now when all the mini35 units are coming out. It would be an awfully specialized function, but it would be easy to implement and very cool.

Are you talking about recording a mirror image of the picture? You can do this so easy in post.

You can also lose a generation of compression in post and get one stop closer to not being able to edit in real time or in some NLEs lose the ability to edit in real time. It also means monitoring on the camera and in the viewfinder without a magnet and special eyepiece. And more rendering. Just a thought.

Policar,

you lose nothing doing that in post.. unless the NLE is a piece of junk..

it is simply a matter or re-ordering the pixels when drawing, which is very very simple to do..

I could even post some code to show you how easy it is to...

if, you flip, then apply something to that image, then yes.. you'd be losing a generation.

but just a simple flip like that. nope.

saving private ryan? what? i think he's talking about not having to shoot upside-down when you're using a mini35 type of device that doesn't correct it for you. that would make the cheap dof adapters a lot easier to use.

P+S Technik Mini35 does correct it for you.. as does Movietube.

The Guerilla35 and Micro35 both have an undesirable 180 degree inverted image on tape.
I know of no such device that will flip it back for a monitor. Still looking though.

Believe it or not, VariCam has this function built-in (it doesn't flip with the Angeniuex adapter)

That's what I'm saying. Cheap consumer cameras have a mirror mode (at least mine does, I think), which is very simple code in the DSP, I think. It would cost virtually nothing extra and make the hvx far better for use with the the micro35 and g35. The viewfinder, eyepiece, any monitor you're using, etc. would display footage correctly, and you could give the tape to an editor without having to explain why it's all upside down. That would make the 35mm adapters much better for people shooting talking heads for corperate videos, etc.

And despite what Loki says, it does result in a loss of a generation to edit this way. It's simple code, but it's still modifying the footage and even real time modifications require recompression (sure it's on the fly, but it's still recompressed.) Sure, there are worse things than flipped footage and you should expect to lose a generaton of compression if you CC, but there are better things than flipped fooage, too...like unflipped footage. And since I color correct each clip and my computer is pretty slow, putting all these real time effects on top of each other adds up...so that footage I could edit in real time would need to be render.

If the varicam has this function built in and since it's cheap to implement, I don't see why the hvx shouldn't have it. I don't see why I'm meeting with such hostility. You wouldn't lose anything with such a feature and it would really help in some situations. I know my first post was asinine (I'm sick and on meds which cause drowsiness and foggyheadedness), but I seriously think this would be a pretty nice addition to the hvx.

I thought your intitial post was suggesting that code be written to modify a DVX100.
Obviously, that's nonsensical.. What you're saying now makes sense.

The way it works is ALL cameras have the "flip" thing built in as the image hitting the
CCD's is upside down, left-right swapped from the lens. So, the camera is already
performing the so-called "flip" What would be needed is a feature to turn off that
"flip" function so the erect image from the Your35mm adapter could be recorded
properly. Yes, I've seen the degredation from doing this in post; it's obvious and
I don't like it. But, I wouldn't count on seeing this feature implemented in the HVX...
It seems a little too esoteric for them to offer it, but stranger things have happened.....

Poor Policar, it took 13 posts for someone to understand his plight! I think it’s a great idea! Jan?

Um, how can you lose image quality by flipping the pixels. o.O

That doesn't make any sense, unless you have some kind of shitty program that doesn't actually flip the footage and save the new data. Maybe what you used flips it real time and compresses the footage to achieve real time flipping or something. :S Even that doesn't make sense because compressing takes processor cycles and it'd be easier to just render out the new flipped data.

While it'd be nice to get it in camera, I don't possibly see how doing a filp would lose resolution; I'm a programmer, and I could EASILY program a program to do an image flip without losing any quality; it's just a matter of moving the pixels from one side to the other. :|

I'm far from being a professional programmer, so if I can do it, then there is no way that FC pro, or Avid, or Vegas can't.

No idea why but it looks worse when you flip it in FinalCutPro4HD.
Have verified this using LCD panel, HDTV CRT, and an InFocus DLP projector.

Wow, I don't get that at all. :|

Probably nothing more than a decompression/recompression stage.... Still, would be nice to eliminate that stage... But, if saving 95% on the adapter means you lose a generation--so to speak--by rendering (which you'd do anyway for color correction) then it isn't that bad of a tradeoff.
