Maito - Picture Style Alpha

Hey everone.
Over the last week I've been developing my own picture style based on the natural preset.
Now the problem is this:
I don't currently own a Canon HDSLR, so there has been no testing yet.

I tried to give the image as much latitude as possible, while retaining colors and skin tones.
I've spent hours and hours getting the skin tones to be as good as possible, but I've yet
to see what they even look like with video! One of the only fears I have is how the color
blue is handled by the picture style, since I had some problems with it.

So without further babbling, here's the picture style preset.
If you have the time please post results!

OK, downloaded.

I am pretty busy with small emergencies (septic sytem pipes), so I won't be able to test soon.

I am curious though. A few questions if you don't mind.

1. You said you don't have a Canon DSLR, but are developing these Picture Styles? How and why without a Canon available?

2. Why based on the "Landscape" style? What are the sharpening, contrast, saturation, etc settings, the "Landscape" default?

3. How do these compare to other available Styles - Flaat, Cine, Technicolor, etc.?

4. Or, a similar question: What are you hoping to gain that other styles don't give you?

A separate but somewht related question. In order to truly nail the respresentation of fashion on my Canon still images (1DsII, etc.) I have always had to profile my camera and apply the profile in post. Especially for red-orange colors and blues.

Is this equivalent to that process?

Thanks, sorry a lot of questions. I have a decent background in color spaces and image processing, but still get lost at times. Still sorting through some of this.

Cheers!
Michael

Well, that's a load of questions!

First of all, I'm currently trying to decide what camera to buy.
Picture styles are one of the reasons why I'm leaning towards Canon. Magic Lantern is another one of course.
At first glance, the landscape preset looked like the best option because of it's handling of colors.
The newer one is actually based on natural, since the noise handling was better and the mids looked better too.

On the question about the other available P-Styles, I think they're great, but some lack in colors.
I wanted to make mine as natural looking as possible with emphasis on skin tones, dynamic range and highlight roll-off.
I haven't really compared them though yet, mainly because of the no camera issue.
And flaat will probably beat mine 100-0, But I'm doing this for the fun of it.

And yeah, I wouldn't probably use this Picture Style with stills (JPG), since RAW is much more better in this region.

And please, ask if something is still unclear.

Thanks, Jussi.

OK, thanks. Just curious.

I just bought the Canon T4i with the intent of getting back to some projects in September when my wife and son go back to school.

In the meantime, I am working on developing my look/style/aesthetic.

I have a long background in this and **had** a good understanding, but I have memory and cognition issues day-to-day now (actually disabled because of that.)

I just posted this yesterday in another discussion. I am using it as a bit of a reference as I try to set up a "Look Book", along with post processing options in CS6 Production Premium:

Samuel's web site for his "Flaat" picture styles are also a great resource, along with his presence here.

Which camera(s) are you thinking about? I can get you some T4i samples with various picture styles/profiles in a few days (by the end of the weekend.) Right now I am swamped with "family"/household issues.

Good luck!

Michael

Magic ears - you must have known we were talking about you? :)

I really appreciate you sharing here. I notice that you are one of the primary people helping out in a **lot** of threads at DVX!

Also: I fixed my typo in your name. Apologies!

Cheers,
Michael

It's probably more likely that I will lean to the Panasonic cameras (GH2), because the video is actually 1080p
and not line-skipped like most others. Aliasing and Moire are a big issue for me too, although I'm not willing
to spend the money to buy a 5d Mark III for just hobbyist purposes.

This has lead me to find projects like Apertus though. Very interesting stuff.
If only they had fixed the image scaling for the 650d :(

And Samuel, I know your stuff is great, if not the best, and I'd like to thank you for all
the work you've done. Also the maito pf2 file isn't locked so you can freely examine it in the Picture Style Viewer ;)

Nice test, GH2 is the clear winner in resolution and second in moire with D800 in the lead.
But the latitude? Wow, so far behind.

I'm glad that Vitaliy is trying a few methods to make custom picture styles for the Panasonic cameras.

I'd put GH2 as the moire winner, above the D800: yes, we managed to find a subject that would show lots of aliasing even with a GH2, but there are no color rainbows anywhere, whereas the D800 does show those at some specific pattern sizes (read: one of the distances in this test).
