MainConcept Transcoder 2.1 quality loss with .avi

I was very excited to see that the latest version of the MainConcept Transcoder included an option for an AVI downconversion from the native AVCHD video files. However, after a few trial runs using the new feature, my excitement quickly turned to disappointment.

First off, you can only transcode a 1080i/p clip to an AVI file, NO 720p support.
Secondly, the converted AVI file loses about half of its resolution during the transcode that, in my opinion, renders the video clip unuseable.

I have included three sample images that were shot with my HMC150 for review. The first image was transcoded from 1080 AVCHD to an Anamorphic AVI and placed into a Widescreen DV NTSC timeline using Premiere CS3. The second clip was transcoded from 1080 AVCHD to 1080 DVCProHD and placed into a 1080 DVCProHD timeline. Lastly, the third frame comes from the same DVCProHD transcode only this time, placed into a Widescreen DV NTSC timeline and manually scaled down to 45% of the original size. All frame exports were 854x480 resolution with square pixels.

It is interesting to note, that the resized DVCProHD clip (third one) retains the most detail out of the three. Whereas the downconverted AVI file suffers the most loss of detail. This is clearly an issue with the transcoder throwing out an excessive amount of image detail during the video conversion process and in my opinion should not be considered an option until MainConcept releases an update.

Yep that's true I was disapointed as well,
thats why I want to edit native but for now its so so with CS3.2 .

Also one of the main reasons I ponied up $129 for Neo Scene.

I just don't think Main Concept AVCHD to DVCPRO looks anywhere as clean as pure DVCPRO or AVCHD.

Looking at the avi picture, do you think the converter is de-interlacing?

isnt the AVI option for downrezzing to SD?.....

"...2008.12
Version 2.1 supports down-conversion to AVI DV format. (1080 only, 720p not supported) ..."

AVI DV as in SD 720x480 so of course it will not be as sharp

EDIT: OK I see what you mean- it is a bit softer than a normal downrez
