magic lantern raw vs atomos prores

Has anyone thoughts about which way to go...magic lantern raw or use the prores with the atomos external recorders?

Thanks In advance

If you look at the 5D mkIII with external recording it doesn't add a noticeable lift in image quality. Not to mention you have to run audio into the Atomos. Raw internally on the 5D mkIII looks fantastic but is time consuming and cumbersome to work with.

The only advantage of the Atomos is if you want to avoid conversion to Prores in post. Otherwise it's a total non-starter for the MkIII.

Raw: Big files and hard workflow. Best image quality.
Atomos: lovely edit-friendly small ProRes files, recording for longer times. Worse image quality (identical to internal h.264)

It comes down to how much the raw image quality improvement is worth to you. So research the raw quality improvment and H.264 vs. Raw comparisons, and make your chice.

The Prores files are not identical to h.264. The latter breaks down easily in post and the compression scheme is different so there can be very visible differences between the two. However, in terms of latitude and color they are nearly identical with the HDMI output to the Atomos being slightly greener.

I haven't seen a huge improvement in image quality with the Ninja on my 5kmkiii. But what I can do now is get a much better monitor, run for far longer without changing batteries, record directly to a 512GB SSD, pull that SSD out of the Ninja and immediately start editing it (after backup of course). I can also use it during broadcasting, by chaining the Ninja and passing the HDMI on to a BM TV switcher, so I'm recording the camera live while broadcasting. Lots of possible uses. I've not regretted buying it. I also agree that RAW is painful to deal with. But it might make sense if you are really trying to do theatrical work at the highest possible quality. For downsizing to the web, well, it just seems like overkill to me.
