C100: Magic Lantern RAW CinemaDNG for C canon camera and 1DC?

Im not sure I understand why though. The 5DMKIII for example was never on my radar, but if they can get this working and stable I'll take a look at it (as another camera in the bag - not a primary unit). Theres just something about FF wides, and which camera shoots high res full frame video?
You've proved my point. If it wasn't for the ML hack you'd be looking at another camera in Canon's product line, a more expensive one.

I don't think your assumption is correct.

To me it sounds like Noel is saying "at this price point, and with the ML feature set, the 5Dmk3 has become an interesting camera. I'm considering getting one".

That is, thanks to ML, the new features might generate a 5Dmk3 purchace (if he doesn't opt to by used). Nowhere do I get the feeling that Noel was looking for another Canon camera in order to get FF wide shots. He even points out, correctly, that there is no other alternative in the Canon lineup.

I've gotten a new 5dmk3, thanks to Andrew Raid, his relentless efforts to promote it in ML developments, within "cameras in the $700-3500 range and desperately want them to be as good as the REDs, Alexas or the Canon C-line". I own a C100 in my arsenal among many other cameras, DSLRs.

I realize that Eoshd articles are neither objective no scientific, at times there's lots of pure subjectivity, sensations, hype. But it provokes for further study, research, additional reading to discover "what is the truth"

Populism, siding your POV with the masses, the majority, helps to get readership, after all how many persent of videographers own DSLRs, 5dmk3's vs. C100? 90%? More?
What is the main message Andrew try to convey? A set of manufacturing elites depicted as depriving people from the most that cameras have already inside to deliver, notably RAW.
A bold statement, which is true. A revolutionary move that is going to help creating an impact, if someone responsible for connection between engeneering and marketing reads it? Who knows?
Good to believe!

on a side note/
The purpose of blogging is readership, the amount of clicks, comments, controversy helps to fire up issues, topics.

I respect Andrew that he does not do direct sales, except of a book on anamorphic, does not have his Amazon store, and "Name" pocket dolly sold on his site. if he would, there will be less trust in what is written on Eoshd. I would not read it at all!

Finally, pupulism, politisizing with the masses of unhappy videographers, for not having a "perfect camera" for little money,is better than pure business, that is tied with manipulations and possible corruption, imho.

Will there be a perfect camera? Ever? I don't think so. Cameras are great already! GH2 is good enough to make Upstream color, a Sundance winner film. As Hitler said, "Celebration" was shot on mini DV!)

Hello everyone,

Speaking of Canon C100 and MKIII with ML hack, It will be very interesting (well, at least for me!) to compare both cameras and how they can be color corrected. Can someone who owns both shoot the same sequence in raw with the MKIII and in avchd with the C100 and made the files downloadable ? That will be very much much appreciated !

Thanks a lot for the brave filmmaker that will make this possible !

there already footage made by dustylens a few days ago with two cameras, I can do it in a few days, too much work, editing now..

True, but the point is, Canon won't be happy if the feature set of a cheaper camera is superior to that of more expensive cameras in their line up.

Thank you for your answer, Oleg. I'm looking for raw file (such as the one made available by james Miller) to compare to avchd file (Dustylens sent mov). So, I guess i'll have to patiently wait for your test.
Good luck for your editing.

I'm sure Canon is keeping an eye on ML. But they are probably curious too: how many hoops are people willing to jump through in order to get best possible IQ?

While a very cool option, raw isn't the way to go for video, in my opinion. I think RED has the best workflow so far: compressed sensor data that is fully editable in post. And if that is too much to ask, I'd prefer a 10 bit ProRes file (recorded in camera) to raw data most days of the week.

But of course, in the case of 5Dmk3 it isn't just the case of raw or compressed, but also the much sharper and detailed files.

The feature set will not be superior, skintones are still butthole on the 5d. The 8 bit from c series cameras will render better color. Its still coming off a 12 bit sensor. The image fidelity will not be as strong as the 5d though, but I'll take more pleasing color up front rather than color I have manipulate.

I think this is perfect for canon, people who are not narcissistic millennials don't want to touch raw and think its a waste of time, they want a reliable camera that can go for hours on end. No one who is shooting their doc in the amazon is going to switch to the 5d because of raw. Once practicality sets in your back to choosing your c100 or c300. For those who are narcissistic millennials, literally in a week stopped all the hate for canon that was pervading the web. They are a fickle bunch. Everyone complaining about raw is now thinking about buying a 5d. From my angle everybody is happy with canon cameras right now, maybe not canon the company, but what do they care they sell cameras not companies.

Seeing as I know what I was feeling when I typed this I assure you its quite the opposite. I was perhaps looking at BMC pocket cam. I want something small and light - lighter than a C100.

Are you his opening act?

I've never seen Andrew making Ad Hom attacks like this on others. Yes, he has opinions, as it his right, but he doesn more for the 'filmmaking community' than dozens of others who seem to make a sport of taking pop shots at him.

You don't like the guy, fine. But show me your shoots shooting in sub zero snow, dragging 6 or 8 cameras around to make really useful comparison videos. No, I didn't think so. Give the guy a break.

Andrew Reid is the laughing stock in filmmaking community

I have the C100-Ninja 2 combo. The slow mo part sucks, but grab JES Deinterlacer for free and convert the 60i to a progressive 720p image and go from there. Personally, I like how Canon handles 8 bit color better than anybody else at the moment, but I think for a $6000 camera they could throw us a 10bit bone perhaps. At the end of the day, 1024 variables still grade better than 256. I don't care if you are "using the right 8 bits".. lol. Ergonomically, this camera is great! Image wise, you don't get on the 10 bit wagon until $26,000 in the C lineup. Wishful thinking yes, but not impossible:) All of us "C" camera owners are getting "My 5D shoots 14bit raw beeeatch" - thrown in our faces everyday now, haha.

At the end of the day 1024 is not always better than 256. I'll take the skintones coming of the c series 12 bit sensor any day of the week over the 5d even with 14 bits

The feature set will not be superior, skintones are still butthole on the 5d.

That is just nonsense. The colors from the C300 cameras are not even accurate, Canon just tints the skin colors. There are side-effects to that treatment and I'd much rather do it in post than in cam.

But claiming that the 5d has skintones like buttholes is completely ridiculous. I know it's easy to make hyperbolic statements on the internet but that's just so over-the-top it's funny. I tested the 5d in RAW-mode and it looks great. It looks really great.

I tested the RAW mode as well and it looks amazing!
