Is there any way to permanently install magic lantern onto a camera so that I can put in any card and it would work instead of installing it on each card? Also how can I formant the card without deleting magic lantern? I know I can insert the card into my computer and delete the files quickly, but what about when I'm on a shoot and need to delete a lot of files without deleting ML???

No

If you erase all the files on camera ML remains, but not with a format. Erasing in camera is fast enough.

No

But you also fragment the data structure of the card, which can lead to frequent buffering errors. Even on my Lexar pro class 10 cards, I can't rely on full recording time once I've deleted something. Format is required.

Wait a couple days maybe more maybe less.

This is very exciting, as I was told it was quite difficult to implement before. I'm not sure how A1ex plans to support this, since it would require loading all of ML into RAM, formatting the card, and then writing all data back. The camera has very limited resources for that sort of thing, not to mention he would also have to figure out some sort of EOS utility that can set the flags on the card to bootable after a format that can run directly off the ARM core.

Meanwhile, I'm going to move this discussion to the Canon APS-C section, since it does not belong in the DSLR general area.

Doesn't the latest version already have a boot flag option just not a leave Magic Lantern option?

Thanks!

I agree with you 100%, that's why I usually format it after a full shooting session but there are those times where you just need to wipe the card on-set with no PCs around and so erase all does the trick.

I suppose, but I'd rather tell the client we reached our recording limit that have it stop in the middle of a take after that. If you upgraded from the Mini-DV world, its the same thing- you can record after the last session on a tape, but you NEVER go back and record over old stuff. Not on the job, at least.

I must admit, I'm not using the latest (I know, how embarassing!). Last I spoke to A1ex about this was quite some time ago, and he mentioned that as one of the complications. If he has come up with a solution for this one, color me impressed!

yeeeeeesssss!!! that would be awesome!! - - - - - in the meantime: I also format the card every time, but I've also read it's best to do so in the camera, which is awful: take card to PC, copy files, card to camera, format, card to PC, install magic lantern, card to camera, shoot - - - which kind of problems can arise if I format the camera in the PC? take card to PC, copy files, format, install magic lantern, card to camera, shoot

For now, the only problem I've noticed by not formatting the card in the camera is that it may refuse to run the FIR (so probably it's only important with the first install).

I run FIRs often (mostly for debugging), and whenever I forget to format the card from the camera, I get a "loading" message, camera locks and I have to take the battery out.

I write the instructions so they can work without problems on many different configurations (Windows, Mac, Linux, SDHC, SDXC, FAT16, FAT32... whatever). Sure, as you understand how it works, you may find out that you may skip some steps.
