T2i Magic Lantern for 550D in progress!

Ive been hearing about ML for awhile now. There is alot of info to troll thru. Can someone link me to the newest/stable build? Thanks in advance

search for posts by alex in the last three or four pages

Thanks, thats what i did, just not quite sure what version to download or are they all just upgrades of the previous versions. I see there's a new Feb17 with follow focus, is that with all the rest of the trimmings?

FIXED MY T2i !!!!!!

Well I was about to send in the camera when I decide to scour the web for a long time looking for other people's experience. Seems Error 70 is pretty common on all the Canon line.
Then low and behold I come across a guy who fixed his on a 7D and Praise be to Allah, Jesus, Moses and Saint John Coltrane the damn thing worked!
The previous poster had this happen with a Black Magic HDMI adapter but for me it was an HDMI Lilliput monitor.
So here is the fix:

--power down camera and remove battery
--power down HDMI device or powered adapter
--unplug the HDMI from the body, then plug it back in
--power up HDMI device or powered adapter
--insert battery and power up camera

In my case the lilliput image came up, I unplugged the HDMI and my live view was back on the camera.

So what caused it? Don't know. I had been using my Lilliput the day before this happened and perhaps the problem started randomly at that point.
It may have had something to do with my cracked SDHC card as I found a few posts where people said the problem followed them on multiple cameras when the kept using the same card. But that was just a few posts and it may have been accidental. One guy had 4 7D's brick with Error 70 after connecting the to the same PC. ( Think you'd stop after 2 or 3?)

I thought at first it was magic lantern but so many people posted with 7D's 5D's 1D's etc that I got more dubious about that.

Anyone else see this on an ML camera?

That's all for now. Maybe the solution should be a sticky . I'll at least post it as a separate thread so it will show up in searches more easily.

Hope the camera stays fixed or I'll be back.

Lenny

usually it's all incremental work, so you can go for that one if it's the last one posted
(I haven't tried it, I'm still on a late-january build: I just can't keep up with the rythm at which alex upgrades the thing!!)

Thanks norman, so I'm gathering that I install the ML rc1, and what alex is posting are fixes?

It just occurred to me- is it safe to format the SD card from the camera's menu while ML is running?

I'm not sure if ML is completely loaded into RAM at boot... I would imagine it is, right? Otherwise, what would ML do if the files on the card suddenly disappeared?
That could get kind of messy, right?

you don't need the rc, all you need is in the latest release zip, including manual and installation instructions

I do it all the time and never had any issues (though I always turn the camera off after formatting, to load ml again on the card at the pc)

Alex, I have added the "iso.round.only = 1" to the config file but I can still choose the other values. do I have to "enable" the hidden settings in some way ?

Thanks

Make sure it says feb20 (check the about menu); if it still doesn't work, post the config file here.

Yes, that was the problem. I had to rewrite the CONFIG from within the camera, and then add that line in notepad - for it to work.

GREAT WORK, btw

Thank you so much !

Can you explain a little about the CBR ? I got erratic values from 34 to bursts of 79 (in 60MB/s setting) - on my SanDisk Class 10 (x30) . I have two questions :

1) How can one evaluate the gain of operating in such bit rates ?

2) Will a faster card (say - X300 ; 45MB/s) help to keep sustained record times or is it only down to the code itself ?

Again, thank you !

Juicy details about the emulated CBR are in the PDF and in the mailing list. It is possible that Canon uses a similar algorithm, but with much faster sampling rate, which allow them to get rid of those bursts.

1) The difference is only visible if you do strong color correction. I don't do that, but I like to record more than 12 minutes on 4 GB :)
2) Yes, but I don't know which card is best; you have to browse the forums, including those for 5D2.

Yes, exactly what I have thought.

When recording/decoding to 4:2:2 you also get greater color depth... are the two (bitrate vs sub-sampling) related in some way ?

You can record up to 30 min, right ? what is the greatest quality (Qscale) you can record that way ?

Will do, thanks !

Sub-sampling is just another way to reduce bitrate. If you apply chroma blur, the effect is somewhat similar to color subsampling.

Color depth is different concept. It's basically how many color steps you can have (if you have too few steps, you get banding).

QScale is not predictable; use the timer and the bitrate meter in ML to get an idea. CBR mode is predictable (do the math for yourself).

Beware that the bitrate meter in ML may have wrong scale on some cards; first check if it shows around 40mbps with default Canon bitrate. It seems to depend on cluster size (not sure yet).

Yes, already done that :-) (wanted to report to you at ml-dev)

It hovers around 40/41 - sustained (with the 16GB Class 10/30MB card. I THINK it was the same with the 8GB Class 6 Cards).

I checked for two minutes max at most modes. at 60MB the camera kneels down (I checked it
against a sofa with a thick texture).

So, potentially, one can eradicate banding by using a higher (sustained) bitrate ?

I don't think so, as qscale does not affect bit depth, it just reduces h264 compression artifacts.

Also, I don't know where 422->420 downsampling occurs; if this is a h264 parameter, that would be very nice.

Disable Trap Focus Graph?

Disable Trap Focus Graph?

I apologize if I missed this somewhere. I am trying to figure out how to disable seeing that "trap focus" graph on the left part of the screen. Is this possible? I still would like to see my cropmarks, histogram, and other overlays.

It is a too I don't use so it clutters things a bit. Any ideas anyone?

Other than that I am IN LOVE with this "magic" camera now!
