T2i Magic Lantern for 550D in progress!

Hey everybody,

HOW DO I SAVE MY SETTINGS?

I installed the magic lantern last week on my T2i, but no matter what I do, I can't save the settings. After I dial in my white balance and all the other settings to my desire, I go to DEBUG menu > Save Config, but nothing I do seems to actually save the settings.

What am I missing? Which button will save the settings?

* no need to shout

* DEBUG menu > Save Config works for me, as in "it saves all the ML configurations"; as for the rest of the settings (iso, shutter, etc.), I think they are saved by the camera itself, I've had no trouble with them being reset after I turn the camera off, then on

Also: New builds come with a new firmware-files. Will I have to install a firmware update, every time a new build arrives?

I didn't notice that, I didn't expect the firmware-files to be changed: the usual ML-update procedure is "just drop the new files to your bootable SD card"

(ahem) I guess a1ex will tell us when a new build requires a firmware update, right? (ahem)

Okay, I figured out how make_bootable.sh work. Now I can boot ML.

There is an error showing up every time I boot: Too Many Cropmarks (max=9).
But there are only 5 cropmarks in the folder? (There are double entries with tilde in front.)
I noticed that I have to save my setting on every SD-Card I use. Is that right?

Will check it out now.

There should only be the cropmarks in the folder, remove anything else.
You have to save your settings on every card because ML only really exists on the card.

There is nothing (visible) else, except for the 5 cropmarks. The problem seems common with Macs:

(And I did even low-level format the card because of it. It won't help.)

I see. Will it be enough to swap the confic-file around to not dial in the same values on the second SD-card again?

yes, just configure your camera once, save settings, copy the cfg file to your PC, and move it to all your SD cards whenever you copy the other magic lantern files

Thanks.

As for the double-cropmark-entries. I found a tool called Blue Harvest for MAC OSX. It solves the problem.

I currently use the 24-january build for focus peaking: http://vimeo.com/groups/magiclantern/videos/18782586

it's not that reliable as for now (because it's just reading horizontal lines, but everything helps to focus more properly.

I've been following this thread pretty closely for awhile now and I'm finally ready to jump on board. I do have a quick question or two that I'm hoping someone can help clarify.

Do I need to start by using the "magiclantern-0.2.0.rc1.550d.fw109.zip" build before I can use any of the newer releases? When I compare the files inside the zip files (and based on discussions in this thread), it seems that the magic.cfg file is pretty important. I don't see that file in the newer builds, only that 0.2.0 rc1 release.

Therefore, for my initial install (after upgrading Canon firmware) do I need to use that rc1 release and then replace the files on the card with the newer builds? What's throwing me is I see most of the files in all the zips, but not that .cfg file.

One last question - if I'm more interested in audio monitoring than HDMI output, should I be using the "magiclantern-2011Jan16.550d.fw109.AudioMon.focus+zebra.alex.zip" build? That's the last one I see that had two versions to download and seems to support that feature - newer releases all say NoAudioMon.

Thanks for any help - hoping to add to the helpful, constructive comments in this thread soon!

I REALLY want to do this, but I'm WAY too afraid to ruin my camera! UGH!

I REALLY want to do this, but I'm WAY too afraid to ruin my camera! UGH!

I have firmware 1.0.8 and I'm even afraid to upgrade to 1.0.9. Never did a firmware update. Scared to ruin my camera.

I read the instructions on Magic Lantern's site and the formatting of the text is confusing on their site.

Can anyone tell me how to do this in the most simple way or make an instruction video? This would be of GREAT help to me. I'd greatly appreciate it. A numbered listed with very clear and precise steps would be nice, but video would be much better, because I'm more of a visual person. lol. I'm worried I'll read or understand something incorrectly and destroy my T2i.

BTW, I use Windows 7 64-Bit computer that has a slot for SDHC cards and for my T2i I use a Transcend 8GB Class 10 SDHC Card. I don't know if this means anything or if I need anything else, but that's what I have.....if that helps. Thanks!

First download the canon firmware-upgrade 1.0.9, you need it. There is an instruction video for PC on their wikia-site.

Ok. Once I download and install it is there a good easy to follow step by step video I can use to install Magic Lantern? Thanks! :)

Can someone direct me to where there may be an explanation of 'analog gain' and 'L&R Digital gain' when audio monitoring?

Also, those who used audio monitoring, have you noticed the audio is a bit low(in headphones) and differs in volume in relation to the volume in the final .mov? Or is it me and something I'm doing.

Btw Alex, I havent experienced the freezing in a while, so it may have been something on my end. I couldnt find an absolute reproduction method, thus me not 'filing a complaint' :)

Again thanks for all the hard work!

Speaking as someone who just installed ML last night (and also had to upgrade the firmware to 1.0.9 first), I thought the instructions within the install.pdf included with the ML install zip were very good. I had no problems and it works great!

When I was first looking into how to do this a few weeks ago, I had stumbled upon this install video which I thought was pretty good:

I'm very impressed with all the hard work going into this, the constant updates, and all the helpful discussion here and elsewhere. THANK YOU ALEX!
