Magic Lantern enables 14-bit RAW CinemaDNG on 5D

Hey Ted is there a MK II build that gets rid of jitters I seem to be seeing in my footage. I got ML to work on my 5D MKII, but I am a complete noob and not sure which version I am running! It certainly is a step up in quality and the DNGs look like 5D Raw stills in ACR, albeit smaller.

Also can anyone recommend a card, I am using a Sandisk extreme Pro 90MB/s, but getting dropped frames. 1880x720 is reasonably stable.

Last thing what is the highest size people have been able to shoot at on the MK II without dropped frames?

Cheers,

Can we give the camera debate a rest now, I was over it like 4 years ago. I'm just trying to share my findings with you guys, if you wanna debate cameras start another thread. Kholi can you merge this with the other canon FF one please.

Looks like someone has come up with a fix for the 2Gb limit on the mac :2vrolijk_08:

Squig,

I suggest we let this thread stay here as there is always progress being made in different fronts, like dng workflows etc. If this is removed and merged to Canon ff thread, someone else will surely post in its place.

What is the date of the ML raw module you are using?

Yes, please continue shooting backyard nature videography and leave those BMCC users to their paid projects.

I see. So the BMCC is now the bastion of paid, working professionals?
Gimme a break. What a laugh.
Just head over to BMCuser and you can find as much backyard, baby, bbq, BS as anywhere else on these kind of forums.

Further, you can be sure that you will find far more 5D's on professional sets today than BM cameras.

Yeah like we're gonna take a hack that's like a week old and not even an Alpha yet out on a paying gig. If all goes well I'll shoot a narrative scene next week.

not sure why some people have been poo-pooing this project from the get-go, even with each breakthrough. on a purely technical level, i find the hack fascinating. and the footage is beautiful.

it's exciting stuff. I just shot some 60p anamorphic and as I speak a guy is fixing the mac DNG batch converter for files over 2Gb. People ***** and moan but this kind of speed in development is unheard of in the corporate world. That's what happens when a bunch of committed (should be anyway) people put their heads together. It's very refreshing.

Again, just cause it's for you doesn't mean it's for everyone. Why is that such a hard concept to grasp?
A $3500 camera with no ND filters, no decent audio inputs, no working VF, $300 for 12 minutes of footage, will demand a huge amount of time in post, extra masses of storage, and doesn't have the greatest ergonomics is not the camera for all...

Yes true.

But it is a bit like complaining your Ferrari doesn't have a cup holder.

I have certainly solved DSLR issues thanks to shooting pro work with these since 2009 and although I have a better tool in my F3 I find the ML raw to provide me with the image quality I want for my personal projects. I would never consider to bring my F3 on vacation but my 5D3 for sure.

It's a dream for you and others, great. No need to talk down to people who don't think it's their cup of tea.

Sounds a lot like most every film camera I've ever shot with. I think many here have not ever had to load mags, to process and wait for film, to telecine at great cost. We did that even when there were decent video camera choices because film looked a little better. Now many will do the bit extra for the 5d3 raw for the same reason.

And to be clear, there was no such thing as built in NDs in serious cameras for cinema until very, very recently. We actually had to put the stuff on the camera.

* On the aliasing debate: I think the 5D3-RAW has about the same aliasing/moire issues as the D5200, which, in practical terms, for me, means "none". I've seen aliasing in a D5200 test clip shot by macgregor, and horrible FPN in the shadows of his comparison 5D3-H264 test clip. But that was on my very nice 52" Sony TV. When I move to the 32" Samsung TV that I have on my editing system, I can't see the aliasing in the D5200 clip, or the FPN on the 5D3-H264 clip; everything is slightly muddled, and these issues are so small that they disappear. My guess is that Kholi has a much better screen than what I'm using, and that my average viewer has a much worse screen than the worst one I've ever had (a screen in which the rainbow moire of the 5D2 will be painful to watch, but in which the 5D3-RAW aliasing will go completely unnoticed). I'm not even sure your average movie theatre will show these issues.

* To put the ML-RAW hack in perspective: what's the difference between the C100 and the C500? In price? And in features? Exactly. (don't forget to donate!!)

* Still, the 5D3+RAW is not a camera for everybody, I don't have one, and I think I won't buy one (yet?). But it's awesome because of this: between ML and BM, they've made it so that it's no longer fine for a camera manufacturer to release a camera that doesn't give you all it has.

* Comparison with film: I thought this kind of expense was precisely what we wanted to leave behind! Nearly everybody would shooot film if budget was not an issue, but it is always an issue. So no, $300 media that can only store 12 minutes is not fine (at least not for most people). But, as we saw when DSLRs arrived, we'll jump through all the hoops if the image is sweet enough.

* This thread is moving waaaaaay too fast for me to keep up!

@Samual H - We are still leaving behind the majority of expense of film, especially in that you can reuse the cards (can't with film, obviously), and you 'own' the telecine room, i.e. your computer. So the costs are still so much lower than film. I mentioned film more as an example of effort required (loading mags, unloading etc), no built in NDs, no internal audio, etc. Even in its current state, the 5d3 is still now worlds easier than film... but kids want everything easy these days (hobbles off on crutches, mumbling something or other...).

Would anyone be nice enough to do a summary of what these cameras are capable of right now? Mk2 and mk3 resolutions, frame rates, audio and file limitations. Just so we can all have a current snapshot.

Also what is going on with the 7D, it too uses CF cards so what are its limitations compared to the 600D with SD cards versus the 5D cameras?

OK, I buy all that. In terms of effort, I'm ready to shoot as if it was film if the image is worth it. But $1K for media that can only hold 36 minutes of footage, that's not 2013!

There's a thread in the ML forum with people trying to build a CF-to-SSD adapter (squig gave me the lead on this one): http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=5470.0
I had already ordered some parts to play with this idea myself, should be getting them today or tomorrow. Let's see if any of us can make this work!

There are problems getting the 7D to work apparently and there isn't expected to be a raw hack for it anytime soon.

The main cameras being worked on seem to be the 5D Mark III, the 5D Mark II, the 600d and I think the Canon 6D also.
