Magic Lantern enables 14-bit RAW CinemaDNG on 5D

You really need to shoot with the C100 to appreciate it. Until then its specs on paper and other peoples compressed web vids that you are judging by. Once you have your own footage in the NLE the thoughts of the camera change quickly.

You may be right Dusty, to be honest for the price...you cant go wrong with the C100. For the feature set and ease of use, it will probably be well worth it...

C100, just lovely...to me anyway.

I watched these the other day on the newshooter blog. Looks like a documentary made by the BBC.. It really does have a very TV documentary look to the footage and is absolutely perfect for projects of that nature....no question. Anyway, I don't want to go off topic, I have been following this thread religiously over the last few weeks and it has been a superb read. Very much appreciating the work and information you are putting in to this thread guys, please keep it going :)

OT: funny. I would never have said that an s35 camera would be perfect for docs:) ENG 2/3 and all in one cams such as HPX250 or XF305 are perfect cameras for docs. Scott have you ever used such a camera?:):) Don't answer that, don't want to go OT.

I think that's just a dogma. I feel pretty comfortable shooting docs on a FS100 (S35) or BMC (S16).
If you can't nail it, you are simply not good enough - lot's a folks are spoiled by cozy ENG habits - you just have to hone your skills, adjust to the format and get better at focus pulling. It's a challenge when you do it first, but after a while it becomes a second nature.

I have 2 kids and I haven't used an autofocus lens since they were born, I'm the focus pulling masta!

I was just about to buy an FS100 to shoot the feature before the Raw development happened, a cinematographer mate of mine has one so we're gonna do some tests to see how it stacks up against the MK3 raw in low key scenes.

^ One of the best ways to practice I can think of. If you don't mind having tons and tons of blurred shots of your kids in the first few months :)

5D3-RAW vs FS100? Bring it on! For a $5K-$7K budget, that Sony would have been my first choice 18 months ago (except the screen position sucks, and build quality could be a lot better).

A C100 costs $5499 for the body, $37.95 for a SanDisc 16GB extreme pro card for 80 minutes of footage, $140 for an extra Canon battery giving you 8 hours of record time, it includes audio, ND filters, and a VF. Total is $5676.95

A 5DMK3 costs $3499 for the body, $1800 for 6 1000x CF cards for approx. 72 minutes of footage, $180 for 3 extra batteries giving you 8 hours of record time, $269 for a Zoom H4N, $136 for a fader ND, and $150 for a Flashpoint Swivi vf which is a bargain and works on the MK3. Total is $6034

For the purposes of this break down, I chose the best cards available for the C100 and the MK3 raw data. I tried to use a good budget to quality ratio on the outboard items for the MK3, choosing items that have been used and trusted by DSLR shooters, without going to the extremely expensive choices. Rigs and lenses will be different from person to person. As will computer costs for raw and choices like whether or not a Ninja is needed on a C100. This cost comparison is strictly from the pov of legitimately going out and shooting a piece with each body, assuming a lens is added of course!

If IQ isn't an issue, in other words you are satisfied with the look you get from either one of these cameras, C100 wins hands down IMO because of XLR inputs and built in ND. These are great features and save tremendous amounts of time when you're shooting and in post if you don't have to sync sound.

Why FS100 and not C100? hard to understand.. totally different picture quality from my experience..

The C100 does have nicer colours and more dynamic range but I need 60p and the C100 price didn't drop here, it's $6400 vs $4400. The FS100 looks a lot better with the right picture profile.

Gave up hope for a FS100 hack, but after google 'FS100 raw hack' I stubled on this http://www.nex-hack.info/
They just broke open the firmware from the FS100. Would be sick if the FS100 had a tad higher bitrate or even RAW.
I assume it can do the same and more as the FS700 hardware-wise.

Are their people who are optimistic about this? I don't know what to expect.

^ It's been relatively long since they hacked the NEX stills cameras, and still there has been very little to show in terms of better IQ, or even UI improvements. I have a NEX-5N, which was hacked nearly a year ago, and I'm not holding my breath...
It would be great if they could just increase the bitrate of the H.264 encoding, that'd probably be enough for me.

Hey, guys - this may be a silly question, but has anybody successfully removed the ML firmware from their 5DIII? I'm having trouble finding clear instructions beyond just "format the card." I've tried just formatting the card, but I always get an error message on screen that the firmware update cannot be found and I have to remove the battery. Appreciate the help!

I do think some of the examples are crazy good. Now that the initial honeymoon period is calming down and we have tonnes of examples - is anyone else bothered by the vertical pattern that MacGregor highlighted? Starting to see it a lot now ,especially if shadows are boosted or there is bright clear sky. Will it bother an audience - don't know really as it doesn't appear everywhere. Also a few face examples, the skin takes on a plastic feel. Perhaps it was the specific post pro of the various shooters but I am on the fence about this really. Also seen cadence issues - stuttering and obviously skipped frames. Are these going to be overlooked or will we start to get a real critique of this breakthrough soon. Got a 5D MKII and have considered hacking it even though it is far less capable and will see. Have a BMPCC on pre-order and am thinking it will give similiar results as this vid below with perhaps a less compromised image ( Moire and aliasing excepted ) and perhaps easier workflow than the 5D MK III. An when I say compromised I am nitpicking of course, because of course the images are extraordinary but with some issues.

What do you guys think? 5D + hoops to climb through or BMPCC. Choice is getting annoying now he he he he.

It's interesting that the camera release cycle also applies to hacks:

1. Excitement. "I can't believe it's not butter!"
2. Confusion. "What's with this noise?"
3. Disappointment. "Well, it was all well and good until I saw that detailed comparison."
4. The next big thing. "Canonsonic better respond pronto!"

As far as I can tell, outside of the hardcore supporters, most everyone else is at the "What's with this noise?" phase. There may also be:

a. Incapable of handling post workflow, either impatient or inability to store the data, worse still the part where you have to actually make it look good via color.
b. Can't afford to shoot it in the first place. You could purchase, and constantly return, Komputer Bay cards until you get a good two 64gb. Then there's no telling what the failure rate is yet, not until someone's pulled down a few terrabytes of data to them. Or, you could do the right thing and buy Lexar. Expensive.

So what's one to do? 5D3 will likely have decent lowlight performance and, as has been stated MANY times, is the only Full Frame video option available. Or, you can wait on a camera that'll have a smaller sensor and may not be as great in lowlight, yet will produce pretty similar results at less than half the price to buy in, and half the price (in time and money) to post.

If you already HAVE a 5D2 I don't see why you wouldn't at least try the hack out to see if you can work with it.

Oh, that also reminds me why I'm glad ML did this: there will be droves of Canon DSLR shooters that simply will not be able to go back to what the camera was before. We can put to rest things that were CLEARLY not right like "It gets 11 stops with Cineystyle." or "Just sharpen it in post." It'll also create a new problem for those that can't afford to use the RAW, or don't want to jump through the hoops but refuse to go back to H264... they'll want someone to simplify it or some will move to a different camera (c100, C300?) that produces something pretty close without the added hassle.

Anyway, I kind of already posted this a week ago elsewhere, but revisiting it now having see your post, Henry. Curious to see how it plays out.

Yes I'm seeing lots of it in people's videos. Not only the vertical patterns but also the jagged edges.

I think this hack is cool and everything but if it's the feed to the live view that they are capturing then we should expect compromises in the final image. My first thought is what we are seeing was meant only to view on a small screen. On a small screen (viewfinder) everything we are seeing will look good. But to use this as video....well...expect there to be many issues with it. So I'm kind of not suprised about the stuttery motion, jagged edges, aliasing and fixed pattern noise.

... We can put to rest things that were CLEARLY not right like "It gets 11 stops with Cineystyle." ...

Here I come, ready to ruin your parade! :)

I've just been playing for half an hour with a 5D2-RAW (I measured DR, looked at the light-response funcion when loaded in ACR, and evaluated color accuracy).

So: I measured just above 12 stops of DR, I would say 12.3.

Wait, how can this be above the dxomark number? Well, because, as I've always said, I can only measure absolute DR: if there's detail, it counts, no matter how noisy it is. Dxomark goes for a measure of usable DR, measuring noise in the shadows, and obviously arrives to a smaller number. a1ex from ML is looking at that "usable" measure too, and has arrived to a number that pretty much confirms the dxomark measurement.

Anyway, no matter which measure you prefer (I can use both, as long as I know what I'm talking about), the summary is as follows: on the 5D2, the hack gives you one extra stop of DR over the standard video mode.

And also, color in ACR is just plain awesome. I was thinking of creating a Flaat profile for the hack, but it's pointless. I don't know how people can complain about color with the hack, it's clearly the best palette I've seen coming right out of a camera.

I said cinestyle aka non hacked non raw. People claiming that the on hacked idea had 11 stops with any profile. That's what referring to.

I agree. I am mainly an audio guy and the thing I treasure the most is reliability and I pay for it through my nose. Stuff has just gotta work 24/7 365 days otherwise I get mad. Perhaps I know what choice to make already.....

Me too as far as reliability...I will take a bit lower tier in pure IQ for something that just "flat works" Limited clip time and the crazy cost of the proven cards already point me to keeping my Black Magic pocket cam pre order, and looking at things like a C100 for a camera I'll keep for a long long period of time.

I will say the MK3 images do look very impressive, I'm happy for others who have the camera, it's just not a viable option for me, in it's present state.

I feel the same way. But for me cost is also a factor. I'm shooting with a GH2 right now which is one sixth the price of a 5D3 body. I could add a BMPCC and a 12-35mm f2.8 that will work on both cameras and still be under the cost of the 5D3 body. Plus more flexibility like 13-stop DR and ProRes.

My only complaint (and it's minor right now) is the the 4K BMPC is only EF mount because of the bigger sensor. My hope is that maybe next year or so they can offer us a 4K MFT camera so that we have some place higher to go with our MTF lenses.
