Magic Lantern enables 14-bit RAW CinemaDNG on 5D

I tried the zip file thing with DaVinci resolve, the zip file isn't recognized. I then tried dropping a non-zipped version into DR and it just crashed.

I can't figure out how to use mxfwrap either, lol.

Could a firmware similar to this come out that would allow the C100 to shoot up to 4k raw? I love the idea of raw, I don't really need it at the moment... But having it would certainly inspire me to go out and film some stuff with it!

LOVELY!

well I got close. I put in a similar file structure folder to how most cdng's look and it did load and play in resolve. However, it was very tiny and small and pixelated. Its gotta be something simple.

You should go out and film some stuff anyway ;)

MODERN filmcameras do not have rolling shutter. At all. This has been debated here in DVXUser completely. So when someone says something:

"Plus rolling shutter is twice as fast as any DSLR, comparable to film cameras."

It's just wrong. Correcting that completely would require a new thread as not to pollute this one. Posting an image from a 1920's cam is not really applicable is it?

All motion picture film cameras with rotating mirror shutters have by definition a rolling shutter. Arriflex and Panavision cameras have rolling shutters. The leadiing edge of the shutter wipes across the film plane at the beginning of exposure and the trailing edge wipes across the film plane at the end of exposure. It shows up as vertical distortion on fast pans, but for normal movement following ASC guidelines isn't noticeable. Compared to digital cameras it is insignificant. But it is there and does affect image blur and distortion on fast motion. It is roughly 5ms for 24fps 180 degree shutter.

Digital cameras with rolling shutter read out the image line by line. The total readout time for DSLR's is typically in the 15-20ms range. This creates not only the vertical image smear that all rolling shutter cameras exhibit film or not, but also creates the line by line ripple artifacts with vibration or shake that we call jello when the movement is faster than the readout time. The effect is very different from film rolling shutter and due to the sensor still being exposed to light while readout occurs. The fastest rolling shutter digital cameras are in the 9ms range, getting close to film.

Also, as an addition to Razz16mm's post, some Panavision film cameras have butterfly shutters which rotate at half the speed of a half-moon shutter, so they exhibit twice the shutter artifacts of a half-moon shutter camera.

Great write-up. I've got some measurements here: http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthrea...g-rolling-shutter-put-a-number-on-this-issue! A bit slower than what you mention, but not completely out of line

Thanks!

I'll jump in here... Replace the D800 with a BMD 4k cam or find a used 5DMkIII ?

Too early to say, there's still some bugs and missing features but I'm 99% confident it will work in a pro environment. Nobody's seen what the 4k can do. A global shutter would be nice but it's a death star kitted out.

Interesting fact I learned today that affects anyone currently buying 1000x cards at the moment for the ML raw hack. I set out this morning to buy Komputerbay cards via amazon. I wanted them overnight. After ordering I noticed they werent coming until wed. I canceled the order, then tried contacting Komputerbay directly. I noticed it was a 770- area code. 770 is my area code as well. Turns out they are 15 mins from me. I contacted them and picked up locally. I had a long talk with the senior manager and he told me the FULL truth about these cards. These cards have the IDENTICAL components as the LEXAR 1000x cards. He even went as far as slicing a few open to show me the identical micron chips inside same as LEXAR. He was very matter of fact about this info. He went on to tell me exactly how and why this was possible. He said the only difference was slight QC variance from Lexar. Keep on mind these cards come direct from Komputerbay with a 100 percent guarentee. Meaning that if you get a card that was missed in the QC variance then return and get a different one. Rest assured I am only a filmaker and not a CF card seller. Please take this information as a gift as I see it as VERY reliable having seen and heard with my own two eyes and ears.

What would be the suggestion for proper testing of the cards to make sure they hold up in all environments?

personally I am going to record raw with them all week in raw. Put it through real world stuff. He told me as long as the cards are not physically broken (like cut in half or something) you have 30 days.

Sound like these are Lexar chips that don't make their QA/QC guidlnes and so they are sold for nothing to a less reputable company to repackage them. How else are they half the price? I wouldn't just walk, I would run away from these cards. Just not worth it the small money saved versus dealing with card issues.

That's a blind assumption.
How would you know?
Do you have any dealings personally behind the scenes with the company?
Couln't it just be as likely, if not more likely that Lexar overcharges by an arm and a leg for the cards and they get them from a third party supplier anyway?
Honestly, these kind of statements are complete FUD unless you have something solid to back it up.

Chips with IDENTICAL components??? Is there even a Komputerbay factory???

Save a few hundred bucks. Go knock yourself out. To me no way in hell worth risking a day's shoot.

Ok, yeah not everyone is up for things like this so thats fine dont buy them. Im just giving the board great first hand knowledge of the quality of the cards straight from a very believable person. I personally was very happy to know how they do it so I wanted to pass that along to people that have helped me over the years. Thats what it is. Kind of like hearing about the "smart money". Its a rare thing to speak to a inside person like this. BTW I have had cards fail from most all "big" companies in one way or another. ONly way to really safegaurd your days work and back up and check as you go. So dont just blindly put your faith in a "brand" name.
