C100: Macroblocking w/Flicker

Did a few tests with a friend's C100 MKI last night. I've owned C300 and have used C100 but never in lower light. However, last night I was doing some comparisons between the C100 and the BMPCC under a single (and bright) tungsten bulb. The exposure was good and ISO 850. I did my basic CC (simple curve adjustment) in Premiere of the MTS file and noticed a ton of macroblocking in my footage. If you frame through the video you can see it show up and then disappear randomly as the shot plays out. It happened in other shots as well. This doesn't feel normal to me. I know AVCHD isn't great, but this sort of flickering macro-blocking seems off to me.

Anyone else experience this?

Could you upload a test of it? Curious to know the texture information of where you the blocking was occurring.

Based upon my previous AVCHD experience, that macroblocking is a result of "breaking" the codec. This is why you shoot with an outboard recorder. Complex frame with full frame motion often resorts in macroblocking in AVCHD. Same with mosquito noise. If the result isn't acceptable, you need to shoot a better codec.

Yea I guess I forgot how bad AVCHD can be. Out in full sun or tons of light, it's great...but all the interior shots I've taken in natural light haven't been great. I don't remember my AF100 having problems of this sort but maybe my memory is failing. ;) All the exterior stuff has been aces like I expected.

Oh well. C100 w/recorder or C300 it is!

The c100 is an excellent low light performer compared to the BMPCC. I have shot with the pocket in low light and the FPN is terrible...

Agreed. It's not awful in low-light with a Speedbooster (on par with C100 at 850-1000iso) but obviously you can't just crank the ISO up on it. The FPN is definitely the biggest issue I see. You really need to nail the exposure.
