MacBook Pro

these are nice, shipping in february. although final cut pro won't be able to work on these until the next update in march...

He talks about an emulator called Rosetta which is supposed to let Power PC optimized software run on the Intel system.

Steve Jobs has unveiled the newest Mac line of labtops. They're calling it the fastest notebook ever.

You can read about his Keynote there. The MacBook Pro is listed on the bottom. At speeds faster than 4x the current PowerBook G4 this could be an awesome option for handling DVCPro HD footage on-set.

Sure, they're fast but take a closer look... there isn't a PCMCIA slot. Now there is an Express Card/34 slot. So only direct to NLE transfers and no P2 transfers unless someone comes up with an adaptor.

What gives???

:undecided :(

was wondering that as well...since apple and panny have a close relationship, i'm wondering what type of solution may come up? otherwise i'm sticking to my powerbook g4...

Boo, I just don't get it. There has to be something in the wings. Infact I'm on hold with Apple as I type.

ExpressCard/34 is PCMCIA's new standard. Go above to read all about it. Its really topnotch expansion that seems leagues beyond PCCard. Unfortunately it seems the two are not compatible. Why Panny didn't decide to go with this instead of the PCMCIA format i can only assume its because no one has these drives and won't till February.

It is a bit disheartening but let's not get all in a tizzy. I'm sure something will come down the pipe soon. Till then I'll wait. Not like i was going to run out and buy one of these puppies this second anyway.

well for those looking to switch platforms, waiting for the mac announcements, looks like the wait may continue...macbooks aren't available for another month anyway, w/ fcp going native to intel chips in march...maybe things will get clearer by then...maybe jan can chime in on p2 compatibility? looks like nab april will be an interesting time!

Interesting options with this new 34 module. Safe to assume an adapter for the old PCMCIA will be down the pike.. as well as some great real time options and storage solutions. I think the price seems pretty good as well.

Anyone know what the FCP update price will be? I bought 4.0 when it came out and will need to upgrade for P2 and possibly this laptop.

I was hoping they would have a 12 inch, and weigh less. Think another is around the corner?

Any thoughts on how one of these new systems will compare to a Power Mac? Obviously they won't be nearly as fast as a Quad G5, but what would they be comparable to? It will be interesting to see how far you could push FCP on one of these.

You can find it here: http://www.apple.com/rosetta/

Interestingly enough, the new intel iMacs are probably going to be very competitive to the non-quad (dual) G5 powermacs... My current 2.1 GHz G5 iMac feels just slightly slower than my dual 2.5 powermac running in single proc mode, so with two intel procs in the new iMac - it should be very nice....

Which only means that when the new powermacs come out - if they're dual dual core intel chips - they'll scream!!!

BTW - the G5 iMacs are very nice with FCP... I cut and onlined a few music videos recently (shot on Varicam) all at home on the iMac. Multiple streams of DVCPROHD with multicam with realtime color correction, etc.. No issues. Nice and snappy. So it seems like it'll only get better.

Not necessarily... If we consider that Jobs claims the new imac is 2x the speed of the old, what we're really talking about here is the difference between a single and a dual core, no more. I think the G5 holds its own against the duo core in the desktop realm, what would be interesting would be to test the new imac against a dual 2.0 G5. My guess is that they would come out around the same. So this explains why the powermacs are waiting for the next line of intels, since we can basicly consider the intel chips to be the equivalent of a portable G5. I am a bit annoyed personally about the removal of FW800 and cardbus, I guess for the latter there will hopefully be a solution, but why step backward in drive interfaces? It should have been at least FW800 or external SATA.

Supposedly you will be able to exchange an existing version of Apple software you own for a Dual Platform version (or whatever they are calling it) for 49$. This was mentioned in the keynote.

Also, I have successfully run my PowerPC copy of FCP on an Intel machine using Rosetta, so it definately works. A little slow of course :)

Man, I love my Mac's, but there develpment path has cost me so much money over the years. Just to keep up to date is mind bending some times.

I look forward to more speed, but more speed always means everything old has to get upgraded and old can mean two months.

I might just get a couple of current macs at discounted prices and stay put for a while...OK, probably wont happen.
