Macbook Pro or MacPro for HD...

I need to make a decision about this, and I just can't decide...

I've decided to go the Mac/FCP route, but I'm wondering if I should get a MacPro or a MacBook Pro. I will be editing in HD and using P2 for the native modes on the cam. Can the MacBook Pro stand up to this?

I need whatever system I get to be perfectly capable of handling HD in all modes, and at decent speed. I do love portability though. Would I see a significant performance increase by opting for a Mac Pro rather than a MacBook Pro?

I already have a PC laptop, so I suppose I could use that as a monitor in the field, if I did go for a Mac Pro.

MacBook Pro makes more sense if you want portability.

ExpressCard/34 FW and eSATA cards are possible and the video card is discrete unlike the MacBooks.

MacPro is one fast machine that is likely to get faster with Leopard next year.

Obviously the Mac Pro is going to be substantially faster -- it's 4 processor cores and desktop hardware is usually optimized more for performance, notebook hardware usually compromises towards portability.

That said, the Macbook Pro should be absolutely screamingly fast for HVX editing.

The only question you really need to be asking is: do you want a laptop or a desktop? (that, plus do you want to wait a little while and see if the MBP announces a Core 2 Duo version!)

Thanks guys, you've helped me decide. I'm not interested in speed if I'm not going to actually use it :) So, a MacBook Pro it is.

A quad core macbook pro would be stupidly fast... but I haven't heard any indication anywhere that this is likely to come out. Can anyone provide a link to some further info?

Cheers

This next likely update for the MBP is Core 2 Duo.

Possibly next month.

I have a Mac Pro desktop. Quite a quick machine.

When Adobe goes UB, things will be even better.

Intel's poor naming strikes again.... The Core 2 Duo is the Merom. Still 2 cores like the Yonah.
