i was looking for some advice on the new mac pro. it comes stock with:
  • Two 2.66GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon “Woodcrest” processors
  • 1GB memory (667MHz DDR2 fully-buffered DIMM ECC)
  • NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT graphics with 256MB memory
  • 250GB Serial ATA 3Gb/s 7200-rpm hard drive1
  • 16x double-layer SuperDrive
would anybody recommend anything 'more' than just the stock option?

also, this is probably a dumb question, but paying the extra 300 dollars for the 23" HD monitor is probably a better solution than going with the smaller, 20", non HD monitor? :D

any advice would be cherished, thanks!

More ram but I wouldnt buy it from Apple I would order it seperate from Newegg.com.

Are you planning on editing HD with it? You might want to add another harddrive or two and set up a Raid 0 configuration

Definitely what SS, said. Look into a E-sata raid from CalDigit or G-tech. Get more ram, and spring for the Radeon 1900 card as well.

And don't buy anything until after Leopard appears within 6 weeks or so and we see what changes Apple might make to the MacPro line. No need to cite the specs of a MacPro-- anyone who knows Macs knows the specs. Basically, you need minimum 4 gb RAM, Radeon X1900, and internal media drive/drives. If you are editing video (whether HD or SD) keep in mind that you will need external video monitoring. This is very critical with HD. Do a search... there are numerous threads on the topic.

More RAM, and perhaps the X1900 video card. RAM from transintl.com or macsales.com. They specialize in Apple compatible RAM.

500 GB or bigger internal SATA media drive.

What Ned said.

Wait if you can as mentioned. The Mac Pro line is due for an upgrade and Intel and Apple are wheeling and dealing. With Leopard rolliong out who knows. Speculation is either November or January. Definitely read up at Mac Rumors.com.

There's a thread or two dedicated to this.

But yes, 4GB RAM fo'shizzle and may as well take full advantage of the internal sata drive bays. Oh and x1900 is a given.

FWIW... as a MAC PRO dual quad core owner (8GB + 5TB disk ....) since MAy2007, I doubt whether you will see a SERIOUS upgrade for the MPro until January 2008. As pointed out on this thread, see MACRUMOURS buys guide . Speculation of slight upgrades in INTELL qud chips (sppeds??), PDD (blu ray or hd-DVD) on board and a new case??,, all speculation.

Simply (like me) _ if you need it then go buy it for your business.. else wait.

It (the octo) is extremely good for segmented transcoding via COMPRESSOR 3 and also for SHAKE and maybe maya (not a huge maya user)... the ATI 1900 is also cool...
w :)

For me -myself, my current G5 dual 2.0 is the hub of my little business. It's been a phenomenal machine and I can hardly wait to step up to a dual quad model. But it would be painful to shell out 4 grand and then in 2 months have yesterday's model. I just couldn't handle that. They will upgrade the Mac Pro soon, its practically a given.

im gonna be buying a macbook pro once the line is upgraded/prices drop later this year,
is it easy enough to add extra ram myself to the laptop?

So If I buy 2 of these, I should be good :D

I have the Mac Pro with 2 x 2.66 GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon, and
1 GB 667 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM

I would go here and buy:

http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/Mac-Pro-Memory

The reason is there are issues with heat sinks with MacPro RAM and the link I provided does a great job with this issue.

It is a little more expensive, but worth it.

The RAM has to be installed in PAIRS.

Or try here:

A little less expensive, but proven MacPro RAM

For the $5-$10 difference in a pair of 2 giggers, I would go with OWC since they have Mac support rather than just being a box pusher like newegg, where you cannot get Mac-knowledgeable help if needed. Perhaps if there were a massive price difference I might think otherwise, but for $5 it isn't worth it.
