Mac P2 management software

Hi all,

We are thinking about developing a management tool for Mac to manage a P2 workflow. It will include working with metadata. Cataloging clips with search etc. Perhaps close FCP integration. It could be like the PC software shipped with the HVX, or we could design it from scratch tayloring it to our specific needs.

Would you be interesting in this software?

How much would you pay?

What features are important to you?

Cheers
Geoff

I'm very interested! Great job! Please go ahead!

I would expect the same functionality as the current p2viewer on PC, in order to have the software out very soon, then further updates.

I would also suggest direct injestion of mxf files in final cut pro.

Also, do not neglect the Pal users, specially on frame rates compatibilities- 50P, 25P, etc...

If you could come with the software in about 1 month, I would pay 100USD- with Pal compatibility, of course...

Ditto!

PAL yes

PAL yes

As I live in PAL land then you bet it will support PAL (even though I use an NTSC HVX myself)

You may want to wait until the new FCP is anounced at NAB to see what they come up with.

I doubt that FCP will work with cataloging/archiving nor allow you to work with meta data, it's core business is to cut. I think some of the cataloging/library features in products like in portfolio would be great to have. Would people use these features?

Yeah I would like to see. You could make it as easy just like a file maker program. and put a really good database system that keeps track of everything. like fram rate. p or pn HD720 HD1080 and Time code. All that good stuff. And then if you could make it export an XML file or something that could be put right into the bin in FCP that would be awesome...

Panasonic have already partnered with a well known Mac software developer to create such a product. I know this because the owner of the company told me at Final Cut Pro User Group last month. You may be able to undercut them on price, but I can assure you they are already well on their way to modifying their existing application to support P2 and the HVX200 with the full co-operation of Panasonic who actually contacted them. I am under the understanding that HDV support will take longer because of the proprietary nature of the data streams, but P2 support is just around the corner. Likely to be implemented before NAB, I understand.

HD-Log, ImagineProducts.com

But since this is nowhere to be anounced et all, i believe you should go ahead with your program. Just look at the firestore, which is developed in conjuction with Panasonic, and the Cineporter, which is not. What are the people more excited about? The cineporter, because it is being built with a lot of user feedback. If you go this route, I'm sure you'll have a great and sellable product. Keep it up!

I'm afraid not quite correct but might be introduced at NAB ?-)

"The MXF Import is a component for QuickTime that allows Final Cut Pro HD and Final Cut Pro 5 users to move to an all-digital, file-based media workflow – when ingesting from Sony XDCAM digital acquisition tools. Why not get started today by downloading a free trial version? Just click the "download now " button to the right to get started."
(From the flip4mac/mxf website).

Best Pe.

right. there's more than one flavor of MXF and Flip4Mac only likes the taste of SONY.
And it only transfers via Ethernet while the HVX has a Firewire interface.

Thanks for the response.

I have read on another forum of a surprise at NAB (FCP), so I will be eagerly awaiting that. If you hear anything then let me know!

Meanwhile I'm sure that archiving and cataloging won't be part of FCP and the $6k price tag of the library a number of posts above means that those of us who want access to our library's and use clips for more than one project will need such a library. Idealy this library will not just be a manual one, but have thumbs, proxy clips, and the whole shebang of metadata. So we'll start developing a mxf specific product for an all digital workflow. I currently use a web based one we developed, but with MXF and the need to not just refer to reels means we need and can be a lot smarter about the way we work.

A possible initial feature set:

Core features
- Batch and individual naming
- Batch and individual moving (including from camera and P2 store)
- Batch and individual metadata editing (keywords, reel, description, general log info, etc)
- Viewing clips (thumbnails and also movies)
- library database (search, orgainise into groups/shoots/projects etc)
- library export data to FCP import
- library backup clips
- library archive clips

Next round wish list
- Proxy generation
- server for multiclient
- web export (thumbnails, search, proxies)

Let me know if there's some cool ideas specific the the 'library' concept that you'd like to see. We'll start with the library and basic mxf stuff first and then when we know the future of FCP and the like at NAB we'll see what options need to be done there.

Very nice! Please work for the best integration possible with fcp, for example, working natively on FCP environment! TXs!
